RWBY 5x09 "A Perfect Storm" & 5x10 "True Colors" reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here's my reaction/review of episodes 9 and 10 of V5 of RWBY! OMG, what in the world, Raven!!!!! I knew her "plan" with Cinder wasn't totally what she was really planning on, but I figured she knew what she was doing when she put Qrow and the kids' lives on the line. Apparently she just wants the relic for herself...?!?!?! Is it possible she's even further gone than I thought?!?! Also, the fight in Menagerie was so intense!!! I was so worried for Blake's family....and I became more and more worried about Ilia, too! SO SO proud of her decision - it's never too late, and I'm happy she's decided to go down a different path! Also, Blake's speech at the end.....!!!! Cannot wait to see what will happen in the last 3 eps of this volume!! Enjoy! ~ MH

RWBY 5x09 "A Perfect Storm" & 5x10 "True Colors" reaction & review

Comments

Episode 10 is 1 of my favorite episodes of volume 5 and the series. I think it’s frustrating in a great way that it doesn’t start off with the battle. I really love the outlook and viewpoint Ozpin has on humanity believing more people to be good rather than evil. This may be somewhat naïve but it’s true that small amounts of people can cause evil easily rather than most people. I love that when he mentions people doing good that’s when Ruby walks in. I think the conversation is something I don’t talk much about but I do love the hope Ruby represents. Also I think it’s been long enough to tell you that the name of his cane is The Long Memory which very much fits Oz’s character. I wonder what’s special about it since he mentioned it. I’m glad they were suspicious of Leo because he’s really acting strangely. I love the idea of fear being the reason Leo and Raven are working with Salem. Also she is clearly projecting about being smart and not afraid. Now onto the chaotic battle at the Belladonna’s home. I really love the emotional stakes/impact the interactions between Ilia and Blake have. It’s a clash of ideals and I think it’s great. The fight choreography is so good and dynamic here especially the dodge and and attack Blake does after the house is set on fire. Also I think her semblance has evolved or at the very last is better at using it because now it seems like her clones last longer and allow her more instant teleportation when she uses them to dodge. I love that Ilia can turn himself completely black to even hide from Blake who has night vision. Once Ilia starts breaking down you can tell that she never truly believed in the same rhetoric as Adam she was just lashing out because of all the pain, hatred and loss she went through in her life. Also you know the shippers ate up Blake tackling and getting so close to Ilia. Ghira is such a beast and how we get the classic type of punch off from anime. It's so awesome that we get the glorious return of Sun’s gunchuks. Fun fact the reason we haven’t seen the weapon used like that since volume 1 is because it was entirely animated by Monty and they couldn’t figure out how to animate it in the new engine until an animator named Kim Newman I believe managed to figure out how to animate it. It shows how good of a person he is but also shows Ilia there is still hope and a chance for redemption because of good people willing to help her when Ghira saves her by holding up what was most likely tons of wood which is crazy. Also Fennec’s death is so brutal getting crushed and then exploding. Kali is such a badass and I think it’s hilarious how she brings the knocked out guy and presents it like a cat would do with a dead mouse to their owner. The breakdown of Ilia after she helps them I think is because she realized how pointless all of this was. I love Blake’s speech at the end of the episode I think it's such a great message that hate isn’t easily solved but if you don’t fight it nothing will change. Also I love the joke of Blake causing the fire but the symbolism/metaphor of it only happening because of their own people is the more important thing to take away. I believe the idea that forgiveness is strength is something everyone should learn from. Seeing Menagerie coming together is really heartwarming. Also once again Sun is the best. The lighting in this episode is awesome. I love everything about Ilia and her story is 1 of my favorites in the show and could be argued to be 1 of the best stories objectively. Finally the title of the episode “True Colors” is most likely primarily about who Ilia and the Faunus of Menagerie truly are. This was a great reaction. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

I love episode 9 a lot. I really enjoy the intensity of the meeting between Cinder’s group and Raven. And once again Raven is basically putting on a show for the tribe. I love and think it’s absolutely hilarious how thoroughly Raven roasts them with some of the best insults I’ve ever heard. Also Watts agreeing because he hates Cinder is the best. I like how they show off the maiden power by changing the weather I know I would love to do that sometimes. Also notice how hungry is the only way I can describe it Cinder looks when seeing Vernal and the power. The deal they come to makes sense and I think the plan is scary in how well it would work. I think it’s interesting that Cinder was so effective back in Beacon but can be shortsighted when it comes to Ruby. The hate makes sense considering how injured she got and her pride. Also make sure to remember that they said Watts is a doctor from Atlas and works with machines it’s important. From what we see later in the tent it’s less that she actually wants her family dead or hurt it’s more that if it protects her she doesn’t care. It’s interesting that she draws the line there and shows some hesitation. It doesn’t excuse her actions but I think it makes it more complex/nuanced. It's great how powerful Ghira is I really enjoy seeing him fight. The interaction between him and Sun is hilarious and honestly adorable. The way this episode ends is such a good cliffhanger in my opinion. It has the perfect amount of intensity especially because of the music. Episode 10 thoughts coming soon.

That is awesome!!! I love that they took the time to address it - the theory makes so much sense and now I'm just even more curious about where the Beacon relic could be!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Same!!! And that's a shame that it's seen by many as the worst volume. I think there's been some great moments for sure! I can see how the focus on character development more than action lost a few folks who wanted more of the beautiful fight scenes and such.....but for me, the character stuff is gold!!!! Really enjoyed it!

Melissa Moore

Fun fact about the "no my cane isn't a relic" line. Alot of theorists. Me included. Thought that it was possible that Ozpin kept the relic of choice in his cane in order to keep it safe. It would explain why Salem asked Cinder to make sure she killed Ozpin in order to have the cane defenseless. And also why Qrow grabbed it from the vault before leaving Beacon. So that was the crew addressing a popular theory lol.

Kayleigh McRae

I love Blake's speech. And there are so many good moments this volume. Sadly many see it as the worst volume. Which I agree it's not as exciting. But overall, I love the character moments throughout it. It was a very character driven volume. Not action focused.

Kayleigh McRae

Aww I hear you, I'm glad you're watching along with me but totally get it about having lots of shows on your plate! I'm so happy you enjoy watching with me, I always look forward to your fun comments!! And OMG you deserve those kudos for sure!!!! You were spot on about Leo!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go!!!!!!!!!!! XD XD XD

Melissa Moore

For sure, and so glad you enjoyed my reaction!!! Right?!!! These volumes are going so fast! Hope you love next week's reaction too!!

Melissa Moore

Very true!!! Definitely helps explain where she's at and how she sees things! It kinda draws even more parallel between Yang and Weiss to have both their parents basically saying "do things my way or you're dead to me" in so many words. Good point about the lack of response, I think maybe there's a possibility she's not so sure!!!

Melissa Moore

Got it, thanks for clarifying!!! And for the info on how many chapters!!! I'm still so close to the end now, but happy this volume is a little longer than usual!!! I think you might be right about Raven, I really underestimated where she was at mentally!!! Yikes!!!

Melissa Moore

Hi Spadeas! :) Ahhhh okay, thank you so much for clarifying that! Makes sense! I feel like I remember hearing something about people suspecting Oz' cane, it was cool that they addressed that! Ahhh yes, the line from Leo helps show that maybe Raven is not so sure about what she's doing. Corsac's VA killed it here for sure! Thanks for clearing that about about the timeline too, I had suspected as much when there was a mention a while back about Adam's attack but this confirms it! Thanks for all the info!

Melissa Moore

Take my word, I do watch these weekly. I have a lot of other shows I'm trying to get thru which keep me from binging RWBY. And I just like the experience of watching along side with you. :) But I wanted to point out I hit the nail on the head with Lionheart. Idk if fear is all there is to it but I just want kudos for me. 😌👏👏👏👏👏

(I do LOVE Raven's character design / outfit / weapon, though.....I want a Japanese-manufactured Raven figurine SO BAD.....)

In the original broadcast season, Ch.10 was CRWBY's beautiful Xmas present to us, very emotionally satisfying.... Ghira notes that Adam's attack will be "in about 2 weeks."; in the previous chapter, Watts tells Raven the attack will happen "in 2 days"....so Blake's timeline has been proceeding from a different point than Ruby, Yang, Weiss, et. al. but they are going to (off camera) use the next 2 weeks to get equipment, train, and secure oceanic transportation from Menagerie to Anima, making landfall as close to The City of Mistral as they can. Meanwhile Ruby & Co. are walking into what Qrow & Oz feel certain is a trap. With respect to Raven, you have to think of her like an organized crime boss/Mafiosi type. The Branwen Bandit tribe is a criminal gang...thieves, murderers, probably cattle rustlers, too...they raid villages and don't care about the inevitable Grimm attacks which follow in their wake...they probably extort "protection money" from local governments, etc. Qrow grew up in the same environment but decided to walk away from all of that. Raven quit Team STRQ, abandoned Tai & Yang, and returned to her roots while Qrow stayed at Ozpin's side. Raven would rather stay neutral but Salem & Cinder and Watts are forcing her to pick a side.

Also motherhood & empowerment.

these where two solid episodes love your reaction to them. Still can't believe you are almost done with the volume. I cannot wait for next week

Ronix

My favorite part of the second episode is how mama Belladona took care of an assassin with a serving tray. Kali lives up to her name: Kali, (Sanskrit: “She Who Is Black” or “She Who Is Death”) in Hinduism, goddess of time, doomsday, and death, or the black goddess.

Daimah

Blake:*Shifty eyes* I stand by what I said.

Daimah

Blake: *points at burning mansion* We did this! Not humans! Ilia: I'm pretty sure you did this

Bejo

As she mentioned once before, Raven considers the tribe her family, as opposed to the brother and daughter she’s already abandoned years ago. And, to be fair, she did offer Yang the opportunity to join the tribe, though “We can be a family if you just abandon everyone else you care about” isn’t much of an offer. None of this excuses Raven of course. She is making entirely the wrong decisions, as she has for years. Interestingly, while she claims there’s no shame in doing what’s necessary to survive, her lack of response when Leo asks “Who are you trying to convince?” suggests that deep down Raven may, in fact, feel some shame for what she’s done.

SeventhSkull

All of the Maidens have basically the same powers. It takes time to master them, so some could be stronger than others . Oh...and 14 chapters for this volume oh and pardon my French but Raven is a selfish murderous bitch...she absolutely would Kill Qrow and the whole crew, maybe even Yang...maybe not

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Hi Hime :) Concerning the power of the maidens, they do not have any particular power, but all the powers. Take into account the different types of dust, fire, ice, lightning ect, they all have this at the same time but decides to use what she prefers. We saw for example Autum, the previous fall maiden use wind and ice, lightning too it seems to me. Cinder seemed to have already used fire or heat even before stealing the maiden's powers, so seeing her use flames, seems logical to her. The question about Oz's cane is a question that came up often in fan theory, so this is a CRWBY way of answering this question. I also love it when Leo responds to Raven "who are you trying to convince", because clearly Raven doubts for making the right choice. Corsac's "everything" catches me every time, his VA really put those guts into it Now you have the difference in temporality, Adam's attack is scheduled for in two days for Cinder and the others, but 2 weeks for Blake and the menagerie. It was to allow the story to advance at the same time on both sides, but also let it be understood that it was not the next door either.
