RWBY Vol. 5 Character Shorts - reaction & review
Added 2021-01-27 13:20:36 +0000 UTCHey everyone!!! Here it is - my reaction for the Vol. 5 Character Shorts!!! OMG!!!!! I don't know where to start - the animation is GORGEOUS!!!!!!! How do they manage to get better and better over time like a fine wine?!?! Also, loved that not only do we get an animation upgrade, but we get to see the "classic" styles of each character done in the new animation style. It's cool on a practical level but also really makes sense with the story that each one would contain some kind of flashback. Absolutely loved the music throughout as well! Dying to hear that Vol. 5 soundtrack now!!! I loved all the shorts, but the one that seemed to contain the most info was Blake's - really, really wanna know Ilia even better now!!! Hope we get to see more of her in Vol. 5! Okay, Vol. 5 is next everyone - can't wait to see you there!! Enjoy!!! ~ MH

Those weren't "real" Grimm, they were multiple Summons from Winter, which is why she was able to dispel them instantly when Weiss cried out to her. We can tell this is before the White Trailer because Weiss lacks her facial scar and she wears her ponytail straight behind her head...it's part of the manga lore more than discussed in the show proper, but supposedly she wears it off center now to annoy her father, a little physical marker of rebelliousness. She is presently flying to Mistral to reconnect with her sister Winter Schnee, who is on assignment there. This dream gives her pause because she remembers Winter's warning of not always being able to be there for her in the future.

2021-02-10 04:37:20 +0000 UTCYang's short takes place just before the events of Ch.1 Vol.1....we know this because Yang has already been accepted at Beacon and is getting ready to go. Ruby is facing another year at Signal Academy at this point and yes, Qrow has already taught her the scythe skills she shows off in the Red Trailer. Then she foils Roman's Dust Shop robbery and catches the attention of Headmaster Ozpin and gets advanced 2 grades to be admitted to Beacon with Yang as part of the same freshman class...Yang is really happy for Ruby and embarrasses her by hugging her on the airship from Patch to Beacon.

The flashback aspect is a great way to show where they came from to where they are now as well as like you noticed a good reason to show off the old outfits with the new animation software. I love the small detail of when Weiss uses fire the ice all around starts slowly melting. Also I politely disagree with another comment I think this has always been how she fights and what Monty was going for. It’s just more obvious and able to be displayed more clearly with this animation software. Really cool to see Winter in the new animation as well as training Weiss by using summoning. Onto Blake I love the flashback scene with Ilia the most because I find her to be a very interesting and sympathetic character that I love a lot can’t wait for you to see more of her. Her story even in fiction like this feels very real and like you said makes you think about things. Not much to say about the present stuff here besides liking the teamwork between Blake and Sun and that they found the guy because of the phone they stole from Ilia. Also the obvious hesitance from Ilia to hurt Blake and the improvement on crowds. Finally moving on to my best girl Yang being a great big sister training Ruby to protect herself before she got herself into Beacon early. Also Ruby still needs to improve in hand-to-hand even in the present. The Grimm in this short is actually an improvement of the bear like Ursa Grimm from volumes 1 to 3 which weren’t all that interesting before. It’s mostly been accepted that it’s a alpha version of the Ursa and we have seen alpha Grimm before with the different looking Beowulf that Ironwood fought in volume 3 episode 10. Also the thing that looks like a red eye on its armor is on a lot of the Grimm at least the ones with the creepy bone armor and since it was on a glove Cinder used and in Salem’s Castle it seems to be a symbol related to Salem. Yang’s fighting style may be reckless sometimes but it’s awesome just how clearly you can see how skilled she is. Also cool little detail at least to me but the reason the Grimm notices Ruby is less because of her quiet gasp and more to do with sensing her fear. Also something interesting that can be confusing to some people is that the animation team had trouble distinguishing between aura breaking and just getting damaged and they just looked the same the confusion comes in because people thought it broke but you shouldn’t be able to use your semblance if so it was clarified later. People theorize that this was when Ruby and Yang both got their semblances for the 1st time but I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed just something fun to think about. Finally besides the comparisons between sibling relationships with the 1st and 3rd shorts something sad about Yang thinking back on saying she’s always got Ruby’s back is that she might not feel like she has considering the last interaction we saw between the 2 of them at the end of volume 3. Great reactions and I can’t wait for you to start volume 5. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Both are trying to help like you said, but very different family dynamics are at work for sure. So true about Ilia!!! We know just how bad things can get for Faunus in the human world, but really sad that she'd also have to wear the mask in Menagerie too. Can't wait to see more of her!!

In Weiss', Winter says " I won't always be there to save you", while in Yang's, she says "I've always got your back sis. Two very different family dynamics from two older sisters who are both trying to help in their own way. Ilia's backstory gets me every time. She joined the White Fang to create a world where people care about who she is and not what she is. And frankly, that applies to changing the Faunus' perceptions too. Otherwise, why bother wearing that mask in Menagerie at all.

Glad you liked these character shorts, it gives you a taste of Volume 5 and the next songs to listen to. This volume showcases Yang well, so I think you should really like it :D. Just to finish, there will be a character short between volume 5 and volume 6.

2021-01-27 14:57:28 +0000 UTCFrom Hayden: Awesome reaction! I love these character shorts. I really like Weiss's short especially as there are a lot of really interesting details in it. The biggest one is that she is missing the scar on her eye that she gets fighting the knight in her original trailer, so you're right to say that this must take place sometime before that. We also see her admire her weapon after she uses that fire attack to take out the first wave of Grimm, possibly indicating its still a little new to her or that she maybe even built it/had it built recently. Another interesting detail that a lot people don't always notice is that her hair is tied perfectly in the middle, and they even make a point at the start to show her tying it there. Weiss's hair as we've seen it has always been tied at an angle going behind her right shoulder, so at some point between this character short and her original trailer, she changes up her hair style slightly to be purposely less symmetrical. We can only really guess about what that is meant to mean. Maybe she changes it to a less conventional hair style as she starts getting more rebellious against her father? Lastly, her fighting style is also a little different in this one. Weiss's fighting has always looked a bit more regal than the other members of RWBY, but here it really looks like she's trying to make every move look as fancy as possible, even ending and starting a few attacks as if they were ballet. It seems like at some point between here and her original trailer she starts to drop some of that in favor of more refined fighting.

Naturally Weiss keeping her Ponytail on a slant and Winter having the curl on the side of her face while the rest of it is perfect. the winter one I read somewhere cant remember, even if its true or false I can see it being true lol
