Attack on Titan 4x07 "Assault" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 7 of the final season of AoT!  WOW............guys, I can't believe I wished for this...!!!!  Watching Eren just wreck house should be awesome but...that scene....and the screaming kids afterwards....as Reiner is just trying to die.....it broke me!!!!!!!!!!!!  :'(  On the plus side, we got to see my no. 1 precious boy (as he looks on at the innocent lives he just took though) and Hange!!!  Someone explain to me how that moment of Reiner showing up to stop Eren felt like that moment in a shonen show where the hero is broken down but shows up to defeat the bad guy anyway on sheer willpower?!  What a mess....can't wait to see what happens next!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Attack on Titan 4x07 "Assault" reaction & review

Comments

Thank you so much, it makes me so happy to hear that!! LOL glad you liked my cart comment! I hear you about being on Paradis' side, that's totally understandable! And yes, the storytelling has put the other side into such a grey area for sure. I adore Armin also but that scene where he's looking down at the kid....!!!! So tragic!! Thanks again, hope you love my future reactions!!

Melissa Moore

Wow what an incredible reaction, I don't think I've ever watched a reaction twice back to back before. I got a good chuckle out of your comment about the cart being good at being a cart. Weird how I never really put that together. I am on the side of Paradis but I definitely understand feeling for those who are in a situation that is just as messed up as theirs. Armin is my favorite but it did hurt a little seeing the kid trapped under the rubble from his explosion. Looking forward to more!

SubjectiveTruth

So true!!! I agree that this is the first story that truly blurs the lines when it comes to who's "good" or "bad". I can totally see your choice about Paradis, because as you pointed out, there is a great degree of self defense involved. Those lines from Zeke and Levi were so descriptive of the intentions of the two sides, for sure!!! Lots of great insights here, thank you!

Melissa Moore

Thank you!! Exactly!! And I really appreciate your kind words!!!! :'D

Melissa Moore

Magath is really shining for me reliving this part of the story. He really cares for "his" Eldians, like the two soldiers Sasha killed last episode, they also cared for the kids, talked to them, joked with them, wanted to hear their war stories. I really can't think of another series where I cared so much for both sides. But in the end I will choose Paradis. Like Armin said, there won't be a future for them without Eren, and it was coming to this apocalyptic fight after the world declared war against Eren and the island. The BIGGEST difference is that Marley started the fight for power. To gain the Founder, to get the resources of Paradis, as propaganda to cement their status as a world power and catch up in terms of military advancement and technology, as they discussed in the second episode of this season. The Warriors themselves seek better status in their racist society. Paradis and our Scouts always fought and now fight once more for their survival above all. In this episode Zeke tells his group to kill them all. Levi tells his friends to survive.

David Caine

I agree.... with everything u said and felt .... When Reiner transformed I don't know to be happy or angry or sad about it.... and I don't know what to expect. Great reaction as always :')

Ahmed Alnajar

Wow........!!! I did not even put that together about the title! That's a good point, this isn't just about the Marley nation. When you put it that way, it really feels like a "David and Goliath" situation....yet it feels like they still had a lot of the upper hand in this one in a lot of ways. Thanks for the info!

Melissa Moore

Just to add onto this, back during that scene where Jean hesitated to shoot one of Kenny's soldiers, he only survived because of 2 things, the first being that Kenny's soldier also hesitated to shoot him because they didn't want to shoot a child, just like Jean doesn't want to now with Falco, and secondly because before either of them could shoot, Armin pulled out his gun and shot her first. And we see this episode again Armin is metaphorically pulling that trigger once again and killing a bunch of people, which back at the series is the last thing you'd expect from Armin who was like our pure boy Falco of the group, but just shows how Armin has gradually had to abandon his preconceived morality at times. Though he definitely doesn't seem like he's doing it in the same way that Eren is currently doing things. Which leads you to question who's plan all of this was? Eren seems to be doing whatever the hell he wants, whilst Mikasa seems more than distraught to be here and seeing this, whilst Jean and Armin almost seem very disatisfied. Floch is the only person we've seen vocally supporting what Eren's doing right now and he was blowing up buildings of innocent civillians last episode so that isn't a good sign. It may be possible that Eren went off and decided to do all of this on his own, whilst sending letters to the Survey Corps telling them what his plan was and what he was gonna do which left with them with no choice but to plan around that and back him up since if they lose the Founding Titan, Paradis Island is doomed. I mean we saw last episode if Mikasa and the rest hadn't been there to save Eren, the Warhammer would've killed him on the spot.

Doccyy

I'm really glad you picked up on what happened in that scene with Jean, where he was unsure whether he missed Falco because of the steam Pieck shot out or whether he missed on purpose because he didn't want to kill a child. The fact that he himself had doubts about this kinda shows that it was the latter and that his miss was at least partly purposeful. This ties back into Jean's arc in the Uprising arc where he hesitated to kill one of Kenny's soldiers and the struggles he had with taking a life. As Jean said back then he joined the Survey Corps to save humanity not to become part of some violent gang. Jean has one of the strongest moral consciences in the series, he's not a ruthless killer like Eren and definitely has a lot more problems with being in this situation. As we saw last episode with how he shouted at Floch for blowing up civillian buildings and told him to keep civilian casualties to a minimum.

Doccyy

Reiner's arc has gone full circle, the jaw titan is about to be eaten once again but instead of running away like he did in the past with Marcel (even though he was thinking about it), he chose not to this time and confronted the situation head on. He went so far as to create personas to protect himself, to run away from his guilt and his flaws. He was obsessed with the idea that he needed to be a Marleyan, to run away from his ancestry, to become Marcel, to be anyone else except himself. This can all be symbolized by his titan forms armor, covering and hiding his real self, but the armor can only take so much before breaking and at the breaking point he finally accepted who he truly is. The Armored Titan without its full armor was a great visual presentation of his character arc, finally showing the man beneath the armor. His titan fits his character. In the manga his titan form in this scene legit just looks like massive human form Reiner. Partly showing just how exhausted and not in the right mental place he is that he can't even muster a full transformation and can only do a half-assed one but also reflecting how much more human he's become in the audiences eyes after this arc. It's funny that Reiner wanted to be a hero so bad his whole life which is what pushed him forward and caused him to commit all the atrocities he did and led him to his current situation where he's suicidal and just wants to vanish, but ironically after he's given up on this dream of being a hero and being respected, is when he actually starts acting like a real hero. Coming to the rescue to save Porco when screaming children who look up to him and respect him are desperately begging for him to help them.

Doccyy

The episode where Armin was picked over Erwin, the title was Midnight Sun. It was referencing this moment where Armin was standing over all the destruction he just caused by just transforming. Remember, the war is Paradis versus the entire world. This is just the first battle. They need to take everything they can get with this preemptive attack because the entire world will retaliate. We already saw what the Mid East Allied forces were able to do against Titans with their technology. Let's just see what happens...

Robbert Bui

Agreed!! Oh man, you make so many excellent points!!! The music, animation, everything here was on point. The Colossal Titan is so incredible and terrifying but it was good to see that folks like Armin and Jean still seem to feel something about their actions.....Eren is harder to read for sure. Ahhhhh knowing that about the people who died makes it sooooo much worse!!!! Eren's nutcracker scene was definitely metal like you said but just awful and horrifying at the same time! Ahhh yes so true that the "screaming out for Reiner" scene is debatably the best version of that kind of hero moment!!! Glad you agree about the "enjoyment" thing lol, definitely impossible to look away, but not exactly in a happy way. Except for happy moments (kinda) like seeing Hange and Armin again!!! Terrified hype is the perfect way to describe it! Thanks so much for all your thoughts and info!!!! And thanks for your compliments!!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

OH MY GOSH thank you for perfectly stating exactly what I'm feeling right now! This writing is so impactful and brilliant, but I'm not gonna lie, it does make me absolutely miserable at times hahaha!!! But in a good way....?! :D

Melissa Moore

For sure!!!! Yes, they are really leaning into that horror vibe, sheesh!!! So glad you enjoyed my reaction and hope you like next week's as well!!! :D

Melissa Moore

I hear you!!! There's no good options anymore, but it's all just a brutal mess. Yes!!!! I agree we are supposed to be conflicted - I know many have good arguments for both sides here which makes it very interesting, but at the end of the day it's just hard to take a hard stance and I think that's exactly where the author wants us. Yes, Eren really pulled off quite a feat there!!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Oh my gosh!!!! Thank you so much for sharing the image and info. I can totally see how clearly you can see his human face here, symbolizing his vulnerability. And also representing how far he's come, with his main goal being trying to protect the kids, the act of a true hero!!! HAHAHAHA I mean for a Titan, that's not half bad :P LOL!!!! Thank you again!

Melissa Moore

Ah yes good call on the ODM gear!!! That was a pretty sweet move from Eren for sure. And Hange's line about Smith...!!! It was very emotional for me for sure, definitely see how it ranks right up there for you with 3x17!!! I agree about Armin's line, I believe he was referring to the horrors that Bertholdt saw as the Colossal Titan. HAHAHAH yes Eren is very much the pizza consumer, not the consumee :P Oh that's a good point about why the other Titan folks didn't eat Eren when they had the chance. They probably were instructed to bring him back so that an appointed person who was "next in line" could eat him. I doubt the authorities of Marley would want one person having more than one....could make them too powerful perhaps?? So true about the moment with Levi, and yes, no one on the other side really knew just how far the Survey Corps had come!! Ah yes, I missed the wings, but you're right! Nice touch that they were there. Very true about the "simpler days"....even those weren't so simple, and our crew knew they'd have to really get their hands dirty to reach their goals. That's so true, I had forgotten all about Eren killing people when he was a kid! Sure it was to save Mikasa and I was even kinda rooting for him albeit also in shock, but you make an excellent point there!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and info!!!!!!!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

It was!!! Ahhhhh yes, wasn't that an awesome and emotional moment?!?! Couldn't agree more!!

Melissa Moore

Is this show ever going to stop ripping my heart out, then shove it back into my chest, only to rip it out again?

Manny

This is… 1 of the best episodes of the season so far. Just the action, music and complex moral dilemmas are so good. I love how the start of the episode is just the beginning of the tides of battle turning for both sides. Like sometimes Marley has the advantage and then something happens and Paradis has the advantage just showing how quickly things change in a war. It makes sense that Pieck and the Panzer unit would be perfect against the scouts because her machine guns are mostly omnidirectional besides right above. All of Marley’s Titans showing up as well as Warhammer showing she still has power left in her is a great but bad moment for the scouts. The animation for Falco seeing all the chaos is so good and dynamic. I love seeing this to some degree one sided interaction between Falco and Reiner. The whole needing the will to live to heal thing has been mentioned before but you do need a purpose in mind to transform so it does make sense. It sucks because people are dying but I love how the warriors have each other’s backs. Also Zeke is definitely still terrified of Levi and is no longer taking any chances and I love this really strange connection between the 2 of them. Eren is now able to transform 3 times in a row which is insane either through intense training, willpower or some weird thing going on with the whole connection all titan shifters have with the past and future Titan shifters. It’s great to see Pieck’s superior judgment and intelligence being showcased by what she’s saying. Because even with the scouts Marley is just too strong militarily speaking and the scouts have more limited resources. And of course as soon as she says this stuff about not being able to fight against Marley well… The Colossal Titan appears. Even without a nukes radiation the sheer destructive power is crazy and terrifying. Also the explosion appears to be bigger than the last time we saw this transformation either because Armin is more skilled with it maybe using more steam with the explosion or maybe the interaction the transformation and steam had with being over the port somehow. And of course the music that starts playing is the same classic track from when the armored and colossal Titan 1st attacked the walls. The tides turn immediately in Paradis’s favor not just because of the colossal but because Porco normally a very capable and calm soldier facing so many unknowns loses his cool and gets emotional deciding to go after the founding Titan. And of course this gives Levi the perfect opportunity to strike at Zeke and the look in his eyes to me says that was for Erwin. Also something I have noticed is that this new animation studio for AOT is particularly good at animating bulging eyes for some reason. And then Pieck and her unit is taken out thanks to Sasha making a crazy shot and Jean pulling off a really cool maneuver. Someone pointed out that this is not the 1st time she’s stared down a Titan it also happened in season 2. Also some levity before we get to a sad thing I’ll point out people were making dirty jokes about Sasha not wearing the chest plate like the other scouts because she was too well endowed turns out it’s because she has a bandolier of extra bullets around her chest. This is going to make you feel even worse but Carlo the Panzer who got shot had a picture of Pieck and the Panzer unit right next to him and another one had a picture of who might be his girlfriend/wife it’s such a great tragic detail. Their deaths and what happens to the cart is brutal. That kid dying in the port as someone pointed out on another channel was shown in the pictures during season 3’s credits. The colossal Titan surrounded by destruction and the Crimson red sky behind it is the best art choice in the show even if it’s horrifying. The look on Armin’s shows his empathy and horror having to do this while we just can’t tell how Eren feels. I love seeing Jean having similar hesitance to season 3 but goes through with it however maybe he subconsciously hesitated long enough for Falco to be saved. Her injuries are so bad but I love that even with those terrible injuries Pieck still tries to help Falco. The fact that Paradis got a airship is cool and the guy flying it looks like he’s from either Marley or another country looks like they might have actual allies. Even in this terrible situation it’s great to see Armin and Hange again. While he’s not the warrior I care about the most you just have to feel bad for Galliard getting brutally destroyed by Mikasa and Eren. Him being used like a as many other people compared it to a Nutcracker is chilling and the entire time you want to stop watching but end up watching in horrified fascination especially as he begs in his head for Eren to stop. Also the fact that Lara can do nothing to stop this but glare is so scary. Also this is such a genius, metal and disgusting way to get the Warhammer Titan. Right now it looks like Eren only got the memories but there’s a good chance next time he transforms his Titan will look different and have new abilities at least in my opinion. Also in a comment on someone else’s reaction someone pointed out that all the way back to the 1st episode of the show in Eren’s weird dream 1 of the images that is shown really quickly is the Tybur children’s toys because in the future he becomes the Warhammer Titan. And I’m not going back to check just in case I see another image that might help me or make me figure something out for the future of the series. Another reaction channel said that the screaming out for the hero scene with Reiner is his favorite version of that kind of scene even compared to the greatest of those scenes in other anime and I very much agree. He is definitely the hero of the Marley side and it’s crazy to think of him in that kind of role after where he started, what he’s been through, what he’s done and wanting to die. Like someone else said what little willpower he has left is to protect the kids so of course he comes to the rescue when they call for help even wanting to die. However I don’t think it’s enough willpower for him to win against Eren as he is now especially with a weakened Titan form but maybe he’ll last long enough to force Eren to retreat since the airship will only stay for a limited amount of time. Something I’m scared about is that I’m really don’t want this to happen because I love him as a character so much but this seems like it could be where Reiner dies just a prediction that I want to be wrong about. The writing is so amazing with how complex it is and how conflicted it can make you. Also while this episode was incredible much like you I wouldn’t describe how I was feeling as enjoyment although I enjoyed certain parts. This was an amazing reaction and can’t wait to see the next episode although I describe it as being terrified hype. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

I think they probably bear responsibility right around the point when their families aren't held hostage by their complicity. I actually don't see how the Eldian warriors are any different in goals than the Paradis people; they're both trying to protect what's important to them. For one side, that means working with a massive colonialist empire, and for the other it means brutal terrorist attacks because when you don't have numbers, harsh guerrilla warfare is your best bet. I definitely agree that there isn't a difference in the bigger picture, between Paradis' tactics and Marley's colonialism. But I do think there's a distinction to be made between being compelled to fight under threat of you and your family's life, and making the kind of free-thinking decisions - terrible situation or not - that Paradis did. I mean, I think it's pretty obviously meant to be a "no good side here" kind of situation, so I'm not at all trying to say that Pieck-Galliard-Reiner etc. are actually the perfect angels now because of circumstance and Paradis are villains. Just that I think the warriros' situation is a little more nuanced than "the beneficiaries of Marley's colonialism." They get to live "okay" lives while their family is still in the ghetto, and under threat. And that's not even touching on someone like Gabi, who clearly doesn't have the age or support system around her to help her snap out of all of this propaganda. Maybe if she'd had more time with Reiner before the Paradis attack...? It's great that Annie seems to have done so, but she's pretty clearly posed as an exception. I'm not saying you are, but a lot of people seem to give Paradis a lot of leeway for their actions because of their horrible situation, but then because it's easier, they conflate the Eldian warriors with Marley as a whole and ignore THEIR situation and just say "well, they should just fight back 4head". Lastly, yes, I totally agree on Tybur. Even as much as the show has gone to great lengths to show what a Gordian Knot of a situation this is, he clearly decided to skip over even trying for diplomacy because if he did - and failed - he may have lost the support of the rest of the major nations. "You tried to make peace with the Devil Eren Yeager? The Tyburs are traitors! Maybe Marley is working with Paradis to assault the world!" Or something to that effect. So... maybe he thought he was making the best compromise, but that still lays the responsibility right at his feet. He's such a memorable, but short-lived character, that it makes me wonder if there isn't something else yet to be revealed about him, the Tybur family, or their knowledge that will change everything. BTW I'm a manga reader, so I mean even besides the stuff that's been learned already there. Also, sorry if it sounds like I was putting words in your mouth. This was kind of a response to other opinions I've seen around as much as yours.

Derrick C. Shields

That was a really really intense episode and I thought last week's was crazy enough lol. This was honestly horrifying at times... Haha. Great watching with you and I look forward to your thoughts again next week!

I would like to point out that Pieck, & the other warriors have been traveling the world & using their power to dominate & devour normal people in other nations. Don't get me wrong; I don't take pleasure in the warrior Eldian's dying, but they are really not innocent. You can say that they were brainwashed, but even Annie, seemed to realize that the propaganda was BS, & that she was acting in her own interest to survive. It begs the question; at what point do people, even the brainwashed bare responsibility for their actions? Also, is there a difference between the Paradis, brutality to protect it's people, & Marley's, brutality of an expanding empire? I wish I had the opportunity to see Pieck, talk with Armin. I wish that Reiner, could have shared more of the truth he experienced within the walls with the other warriors. I wish it had been possible to talk this out. It ultimately makes Willy Tyber, the villain in my eyes. The best knowledge & opportunity for diplomacy was in his power to pursue. Perhaps, he had a perspective that we didn't get to know him long enough to learn, but right now he looks like a villain to me:)

TheMoonKingdom

I'm not an overly emotional person normally but I cried a bit in this episode because it's just so preventable but it also isn't anymore. Things have gone too far for people to let people live (plus there's always corrupt people around too). But it was so brutal that people had to die when they had done nothing wrong. And I'm glad you are just as conflicted as I am (as we're supposed to be!). Lastly, it's so mind-blowing that Eren transformed 3 times so quickly. In comparison to others, that's tough!

RationallySassy

He probably wouldn't be able to use the power that quickly(there are several lines and information through the story indicating that most of the time when a person takes a new titan power he needs time to assimilate the power to be able to use it, normally the person is not able to use it right after taking the power). And in fact I'm almost sure that he would have also to transform again for his titan to form the jaw(something that he couldn't do since he was in the third transformation and practically without any energy).

Floweyyyy

I don't have much to add, but I will say; that was one of the most sadistic things I've ever seen. Eren could have simply eaten Galliard, taken the Jaw Titan's powers, and then used it to eat the War Hammer (and a lot of reactors assumed that's what he was going to do)... But instead, he made Galliard do it himself. And all Galliard could do the whole time was impotently cry for help. He had no idea who he was getting in trouble with, indeed...

just one more comment about the ending: When the chapter with Reiner waking up came out in the manga, people felt attracted for this "half-titan" form of Reiner, they thought it was very hot and called it "bishounen titan" 😂😂😂😂 I believe you are familiar with what that means, but just in case you don't: "bishounen" means something like "handsome man/boy" and things like that 😂😂😂😂

Floweyyyy

There are many more unprotected parts of his body and some other parts(like the head and abdomen) are still in his human form(like I said, it was a half human and half titan form).

Floweyyyy

See how it was in the manga (I get a colored version, to see it better, and it's the same scene from this episode, so there are no spoilers of what happens next): https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365007091460734988/803692661537636403/35.png

About the last scene: Some people thought that Reiner's titan evolved or something like that, but no this is not some kind of evolution of Reiner's titan, it's a weaker form, a "half-transformation"(in the manga it's more obvious, the anime made it a little different, with the skin on his face looking like a armor, but in the manga it's just his human face without armor and also there were more parts of his body without armor. It's a half titan and half human form). In that scene, his titan is urnarmored(notice how several parts of his body is unprotected and how the armor seems to be just slowly taking form) it's a weaker form, as I said, because of his little desire to live and fight in that moment. The only things that is giving him a little energy right now to get up are the screams of Gabi/Falco and the fact that his friends, the people he love are in great danger. Isa used everything he could to show Reiner showing up to save Porco as something beautiful in the manga. His titan showed up in the battlefield totally "naked", which both makes him look more human and symbolizes how vulnerable Reiner was at that moment(in many ways). It also symbolizes how selfless his action was. He is truly being moved only by the desire to save someone he care about here, he didn't care about his own protection and momentarily overcame his desire to die to save someone else. He is no longer being that boy who was moved by a selfish desires to be a hero and be respected, who was afraid and ran away instead of trying to save his friend, Marcel(which is totally understandable, especially for a child, of course) or someone who did horrible things and became a "fake hero" for his people. Of course that what happened in the past can't be erased and is something marked him forever, but Reiner clearly changed and this time he's acting and being a real hero.

Floweyyyy

ok, the mid episode info text means I was half-right at least, they weren't using ODM gear specifically designed to kill people but this is superior ODM gear that excels in both people & titan killing. I did love Eren's move that was that when his Titan was stuck he climbed out of it and made a new Titan Also love Hanji's comment to Armin about "Did you get possessed by Erwin or something?" You(Melissa) being invested in all of these characters I can feel and see all the conflicts making this a very emotional episode for you, I think it's top 2 in emotional episodes I think the one that is in top 1 is the episode in where Armin "dies" after fighting the colossal Titan. I do feel though that right before Armin transformed looking at his face I did the interpretation of him having the same conflicts as Melissa, I also felt Armins connection to Bertholdt maybe more of an understanding of Bertholdt. When he said "was this what you saw?" I interpreted that as "Was this the horrors you saw" (unless this is exactly what the subtitles said and I just forgot) And yes Eren is up to Three Titans in one now, he is no longer pizza now he is the pizza-eater. And talking about pizza since I've been watching some other reactors reacting to earlier seasons I started to think so many times Eren has been in other Titans mouths, Annie, Reiner why didn't they eat him? They had all the oppurtunity to do so. And I came to the conclusion/theory they don't want to do that because then they would have two titans powers in one titan, and I believe they would want that spread out among different people instead of having it focused in one person. Oh right, I'm also glad we got an explanation for why they were setting up lights some episodes earlier And I like what they did with Levi ackerman & beast titan moment, Beast titan just falling and Levi being there. (I like that they didn't show what Levi did to get there & this must be what it is for Titans facing Levi all of sudden he is just there) And I think like you said both Beast Titan & Cart Titan falling and Jaw Titan, I don't think Marley Nation people really understood exactly how good the survey corps are at killing Titans. Talking about Survey corps I still liked that we saw the survey corps "logo" the wings of freedom on Armin's uniform I might have missed it on the others but it was very clear on his when he was standing still next to Hanji. I don't know what the plan was but in the "simpler day" we only cared about the people and not the titans, so then the plans sometimes could just be killing people on our side, but now I suspect the plans involve killing people on both sides(not really talking abut the people fighting but more like collateral damage (maybe not the right word)) And I still remember the words about to win you need to abandon your humanity (I don't remember if it was Armin or Erwin who said it or both, it might even have been Pixis) This went on much longer than I expected(My comment) but I have one last thought. We know that Eren's greatest powers is his motivation "Kill all titans, slaughter them all" Also Eren isn't perhaps that good of a person and the signs were there early , He killed two people when he was was it 9 years old, Sure it was to save Mikasa, but he basically planned for it & murdered two people when he was 9 years old, Could a good person have done that? Ok I think that's all. This got very long :) Thank you if you read this far

MagnusVD

God this episode is so good. Reiner wanting to die but still coming out to fight, and with a different armored form to boot, is so fucking emotional.
