Vinland Saga 1x16 "History of Beasts" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 16 of Vinland Saga!  Well, what had started as a little suspicion that Askeladd's good luck was running out appears to be turning into
a full scale mutiny!  Much to the surprise of those few guys who jumped ship, though, Thorkell was NOT welcoming of their presence :P  Askeladd seems very calm so I'm wondering if he has something up his sleeve???  Or is this really it?!?!  Will he and a few other people just be on the run after this?!  Can't wait to find out!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Interesting! So Rome wasn't heavy on the persecution, they were mostly just doing their thing unless someone got in their way. Not exactly a great moral system, and really unfortunate like you said that fear motivated so many terrible acts. I'm learning so much about history through this show haha! Thanks for the info!

Yeah, as far as empires go Rome was fairly tolerant of other religions. The big thing was that people from new colonies respected and contributed to the concept of Roman statehood. As long as people did that Rome didn't care as much what their beliefs were and would actually incorporate those beliefs as well. It wasn't until Christianity became the dominant religion that they really started to persecute others for their faith for reasons outside of statehood. (People were persecuted for their faith, but only if that faith was seen as a hindrance to their being a Roman. Still not cool, but it really was all about making that system work.) A big part of why Christians were persecuted in the first place was because of fear. It was apparent how fast the religion was spreading and people feared that lack of diversity and also saw it as an attack on their various beliefs. Fear makes people do horrible things and that certainly didn't change once Christianity became the state religion. Roman life wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but that little bit of tolerance was one positive.
