RWBY Vol. 1 Soundtrack Reaction & Review

(It's playing in the small/low quality player right now because it's still processing - this should go away but it can also be downloaded if you want to see it in a larger player!)

Hey everyone!!!  Here it is - my reaction to the soundtrack for Vol. 1 of RWBY!  I had so much fun listening to the songs in depth!  There were a few (like Red Like Roses Pt. 2) that I had heard in the show but didn't remember/realize, so it was like hearing them for the very first time!  My top favorites are Gold and I Burn, which I have been playing on CONSTANT loops since this reaction!  ^_^  This was my first music reaction, so I hope I did it right - tried to just carefully listen and comment on what I was picking up from the song when I could!  I'm absolutely hooked on this soundtrack and on the show, and I hope you have fun with my reaction here!

Special thanks to Russell for sharing this playlist with me!  Here it is if you wanna check it out:   youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgTmcdHkqtxVfx9gxFvL8UVAZzS-asoW8

This Will Be The Day starts off pretty optimistic and hopeful. It talks about preparing for the greatest moments of your life and that your dream will soon be fulfilled. That "This Day" will be the moment where they step into a new world full of miracles and ancient wonder. However, as the song goes on, the upbeat and hopeful tone of the music slowly transitions into something more foreboding and cautionary. That even though they wanted a romantic life, something like a fairy tale, the world is in danger and needs a defender. "This Day" will be the day that they fulfil their dreams, but it is also the day that the world starts changing and not for the better.

Well, I had a really long post explaining my thoughts on some songs, but it disappeared. :( BUT I REFUSE TO GIVE UP, DAMNIT!! SO HERE'S MY SECOND ATTEMPT!! Despite the exciting and heart-pounding music RWBY has, a lot of their pieces have sad or foreboding lyrics that contrast against the tone of the music. Even Gold, the most heartwarming piece of music in this volume isn't exempt from this since it has the line about "When the days turn dark and we start to fall". Not "If". "When".

Yay! (And so glad this worked out with your birthday week, are you getting excited for Sweet 16??? It won't be long now! ^_^) I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on the Weiss song, I know you have a great appreciation for her character and would be able to shed more light on the song! Ohhh so that's what the white text meant...good call about Ruby seeing the person with the white hood!! I had forgotten. Ah yes, Gold is such a fun happy song about Yang and Ruby, but that one line about the rose on a summer's day is painful! Ohhhh I do remember that cloak scene now, and I probably said to just let the cloak go lol, but so true that there's most likely a deeper meaning to that cloak! That's a great observation! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and hope class went great! :D

Ah, finally to the volume 1 soundtrack reaction. Great, I was waiting for this since the red trailer. Great bday present by the way. I loved Mirror Mirror part 1, giving insight into her character. Weiss songs should definitely be heard in order, as they really do go through her arc. Don’t worry, it’s not the last time she sings in front of an audience. Red like Roses part 2... I’m sure you’ve been told already that it’s a past experience and not a future one and how Summer Rose is said on the gravestone. I love how you thought the white text meant Weiss, but did you notice in the opening where Ruby has her red hood on and is looking at someone with a white hood on? Also, Gold is about the sisterly bond between Yang and Ruby on how Yang will always be there for Ruby. I always flinch at the line “Like the smell of a rose on a summer’s day, I will be there to take all your fears away”. It’s saying she’s trying to emulate Summer who’s gone in trying to be there for Ruby when she isn’t. That always hurts dang it! “It’s your blood that’s red like roses.” Oof. No wonder why Yang’s able to take on that role and not still traumatize her. She’ll turn her life to gold, nowhere near to the red that’s symbolic of Summer dying. Remember when Ruby was trying to get her red cloak unstuck in episode 8 instead of just unclasping it to get away (aka what reactors during the episode keep saying to do)? Perhaps the cloak is the connection that she still has to her mother despite her loss. Maybe I’m going a bit too deep but I can’t help it. It hurts. Great reaction Mei. I’m going to class now, cya!

Sweet, glad to hear it!!! I love the sense of community that's developed here in Hime-Land! It always makes me happy ^_^ And there's so much to learn!!!

Melissa Moore

Hahah thanks!! Omg I know, I'm so attached/invested now! I love this show so much! It's really blowing my mind! XD

Melissa Moore

Thank you for pointing that out!!! I actually rewatched the trailer recently and that stood out to me...plus yesterday I watched an episode that explains it!!! :O Perfect timing I guess haha.

Melissa Moore

Thank you so much!!!! YES!!! It's crazy to think of how amazing the music was at this point even as a new and fairly low budget venture. Oh Lord!!!! I know I'm not ready!!!! >.< Thank you for explaining the perspectives on all the songs!!! It just so happens I rewatched the trailer recently and noticed "Summer Rose", so that makes sense! I'm scared for what "I May Fall" foreshadows!!! >.< Hope you love my Vol. 2 reactions!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

Ah thank you!!! ^_^ Ohhhhhh I was wondering if "Summer Rose" had something to do with a relation to Ruby! I actually just rewatched the trailer a few days ago and started wondering. And yesterday I recorded my reactions to the following eps, and sure enough they explain all that! Thanks!

Melissa Moore

I’m learned a lot from these comments. I loved it!

Manny

I would love Caseys Mother to come sing again for RWBY is voice is so powerful

Darren

I also love how you are worried about girls too, just means we know how much you love the show :)

Darren

fun fact in Red Like Rose pt. 2 Casey is singing with her mom

About This Will Be The Day and Red Like Roses I and II... I'd like to point out that in the Red Trailer you can see that the gravestone Ruby's visiting has "Summer Rose, thus kindly I scatter" engraved on it. That's a pretty big clue, but you'll learn more about that in future volumes.

Great reaction, the music is for me still the best part about the show ... even with a low budget at first, Jeff and Casey killed with this soundtrack "This will be the day" is im overall about Ruby and some foreshadowing of the future events (you are not ready), "Mirror Mirror" shows that despite being rich, Weiss never really had a good family life (there is a lot more to it then of what they show in episode 15 ...) From Shadows is about Blake and Adam and there perspective about the human world (there is a interresting diffrence between them both if you read the lyrics again) I Burn is just a song about Yang being badass, Gold is actually a yang song, about her and the relationship of her sister Ruby, I May Fall is just pure foreshadowing, Red like Roses 2 is Ruby song, and without getting into much spoiler did you notice the fanart of ruby standing to a grave stone, and if remember the red trailer at the beginning ruby was visting a grave with the name "Summer Rose" on it ... you can guess what the song is about .... Can't wait for your Volume 2 reaction!

Dragon Huntress

Good catch on how the male lyrics in From Shadows are more inclined towards violence and revenge. Red Like Roses part 2 Is about Ruby and her mom, in both the red trailer and the opening you can see Ruby in front of her gravestone.

Also a few fun facts now that you've listened to the OST. Gold you guessed correctly is about the sister relationship between Ruby and Yang. I May Fall is a very interesting song because it doesn't appear in the show until later in the series but is on the first OST. The rap breakdown from I Burn is performed by Lamar Hall, he has many songs throughout the series with Casey and Jeff. Red like Roses part 2 is from a past experience not a future one don't worry. You will find out in Vol 2. so I won't spoil it.

Great reaction. While I love the story and world of RWBY the music brings to me to tears no matter when I hear it. Now overall Vol.1 I feel is the weakest of all the OST's. Not that it's bad not by any stretch. Rather it is very much a starting point for all the musical motifs and themes that are explored throughout the rest of the series.
