Vinland Saga 1x05 "The Troll's Son" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 5 of Vinland Saga!  And here I thought we'd do an immediate time jump, but no!  Instead we get to see, in excruciating detail, how poor Thorfinn survived for those first few days (or weeks maybe??) after what happened to his father.  He was so fiery and determined, I hated seeing him get laughed at and kicked around!  It was both sad and empowering to watch him get better and better at survival.
I really wish he didn't have to go down this path, but I think his fate was sealed as soon as he saw Thors die.  We also get to see Ylva and the mom deal with Thors' death, which was less action-packed, but just as heartbreaking!  I hope they're all reunited one day!  And now we embark on Thorfinn's new journey - to make enough accomplishments to qualify for that duel!  Can't wait to see what happens next!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Ah okay, that makes sense! I definitely got the idea that Askeladd had a lot of respect for Thors, too! Thanks for clearing that up!

Melissa Moore

I believe Askeladd told the Jomsvikings that ‘Thors died an average death’ because they didn’t deserve to hear what actually happened. It’s never said or anything, but it’s pretty heavily implied that Askeladd respected Thors, and he does have his own... weird morals. It’s clear that whole thing made an impact on him, so at the very least, he wasn’t being completely honest to them.

So true!!! As agonizing as it is to watch him go through this in detail, it does get us even more invested and cheering him on to know where he started and all he's been through. I do want him to get strong and protect himself...I just hope he doesn't totally lose himself along the way!!! :O

Even though it's not a feel good show; I think anyone who's experienced loss & grief can relate to Thorfinn. It's kind of soul crushing to watch this child suffer, but you also root for him to become strong so that he might protect himself:)

Exactly!!!!!!!!! D':

Aftermaths of a death are the hardest to get through. 😖

Hmm!! Good question!!!

Melissa Moore

Great point!!! I'm glad you reminded me about that. Oh I know, that's exactly what Thors didn't want for his son! But so true that Thorfinn's thirst for revenge will drive him to even join the Vikings because of how badly he wants to make them pay.

Melissa Moore

I wonder if Ylva goes with Leif to find Thorfinn, if so that might explain someone in the OP.

Thorfinn using the dagger his father left him is pretty meaningful. He was told to only use it to defend himself. The most painful thing for me about this episode was when Thorfinn was called a viking. That's the last thing Thors wanted but he goes along with it because he wants revenge that badly.
