Watchmen 1x05 "Little Fear of Lightning" reaction & review

NOTE: please disregard how I got confused about the plot a bit starting at the group therapy session scene....not sure why I was so determined that it was a flashback lol...maybe because the two blonde females looked similar??  Anyway, I figure it out by the time the scene takes us more into the plot at hand, just wanted to throw it out there since it's a few minutes of me having the wrong idea!  *Facepalm*

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 5 of Watchmen!  Whoa, we got a huge backstory and major push in our plot in this one!  I was so sad to see Looking Glass' past and how it's affected him so deeply.  I wasn't sure what to make of him until this ep, then I liked him a lot, and then I was....mixed at the end there lol, due to what happens.  Not only does he learn everything in this ep, but we the audience find out the secrets that the senator and police chief have been keeping!  :O  And to end the ep with Angela getting arrested....talk about a cliffhanger!  Looks like she will be experiencing some memories soon, but whose?  Will's?  Also who is Adrian's space-corpse-message for - Dr. Manhattan?
Guess we'll find out!  Can't wait to see what happens next!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Yay! Thanks for all this info! That is so incredibly fitting that the title is from a story in which people battle a giant squid!!! Ohhh okay, did not realize he was on one of the moons of Jupiter, and you raise a good point about how in the world he got up there!! Also, that is such a great point about generational trauma being a focal point in this series, as we can see with Laurie, but also in dealing with traumatic events in the BIPOC community. That's very true that there are still many people today who went through the events of the Civil Rights Movement, the AIDS pandemic, and even the Holocaust. "Freed and liberated" are words that can be thrown around way too lightly, unfortunately, and it's sad to think that generations of families are still dealing with the trauma. :( Lastly, thanks for clearing that up about the plastic surgery! I was wondering why he basically just looked like an older version of himself lol! Thanks again, always great to hear your feedback and insights on these episodes!! :)

Ahhh okay, thanks for clearing that up! That makes sense. Very true that it becomes less of a threat over time though! Hmm, curious to see what they have planned with the portal! Thanks for the info!

Okay, my love! To start with the title! "Little Fear of Lightening" is a quote from Jules Vernes' Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: "If there were no thunder, men would have little fear of lightning." The book, a classical type of Odyssey adventure wherein the crew of a ship heroically battle a giant squid. Also, it isn't a spoiler to say anymore that in the background of the scene where Adrian stacks his bodies in space, Jupiter is seen to be quite close to the surface of the prison. It would suffice to say that he is on one of the moons of Jupiter. But which moon and How In Sam Heck he made it UP THERE (?!) remains a mystery. In regards to Wade, this episode is a quick hint into something that this show deals with in SPADES and that is Genetic, or Generational Trauma. Laurie is quite obviously traumatized by both her mother and her father, and the young man at the meeting talks about living through his mother's trauma and having it become his own. This trauma is something that is quite often seen in BIPOC and other minority communities in America today. Many people seem to forget that there are people alive today that survived the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s, and even some who survived the Holocaust. Queer men and women in their 40s and 50s are reliving the trauma of the 80s AIDS pandemic as we speak. Their trauma is felt through generations, even in those that are said to be "freed and liberated" from the realities of the past. Edit: not all of Petey's information is correct...Adrian has not had plastic surgery, and Jeremy Irons is a handsome man. :P

Veidt chose to keep reminders going with the squids in an attempt to keep stoking fears, as the concern is leaders would eventually go back to threatening each other with nuclear weapons without a mutual fear that is bigger than themselves. It could be argued after decades it has just became the new normal though The portal tech the 7th Kavalry is working on is still a work in progress as this episode shows them trying to work out the tech issues with it. The reasons why they want the tech for themselves is not clear yet.
