Vinland Saga 1x01 "Somewhere Not Here" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 1 of Vinland Saga!  They did a great job of establishing the premise, tone, and characters right away.  I can already tell the dad has a really good heart and I enjoy the family dynamic!  We've established the title for the show right away, showing this idealized land called Vinland.  The ep has a good blend of the harshness of the time period combined with the hope/longing for adventure and somewhere new.  Wondering now if there will be a time jump at some point, since the theme seemed like it showed an older version of Thorfinn!  We even get to meet an intimidating and dangerous character in Halfdan, who I'm sure we'll be seeing more of in the future!  All in all, I feel like they do some good worldbuilding here and even though it's the first ep, I already feel like I really wanna know what happens next!  Excited to start this journey!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

New patron here, I was thinking about it for a while but your Kabuki Warriors shirt pushed me over the top! Any fan of Asuka and Kairi is usually a pretty solid person lol. Anyways, this show is amazing and I look forward to watching along.

That's awesome! Very cool that they've decided to go with a lot of historical accuracy! Whoa, even Vinland was a real thing they believed in?! That's pretty cool! Thanks for the info :D

Nice!!!!! Hahaha that's awesome about learning some lessons from Spongebob XD To be honest, the only Leif Erikson I could think of was the 80s singer with that name, and I wasn't about to say that and sound even more foolish LOL! Yes, you can tell it's gonna have that harsh/brutal tone, kinda similar to Game of Thrones (maybe a bit less nakedness though haha). That was a great story for sure! So true that years ago life was so different and the conditions were so harsh! So excited that you're looking forward to seeing the rest - I am too! ^_^

Oh nice!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see more! Thanks for watching along with me!

YAY!!! Was so glad to see some of WIT's lovely animation here! Really liking this series so far, I hope you enjoy watching it along with me too!!! ^_^ Thanks!

Hey Melissa, yes every character is historical and a lot of events in the show happened in real life, its Viking history and if you search up the character's name the real historical person pops up. Even the belief in "Vinland" was a real belief back then.

This is a new anime for me. I love the first episode. I'm not sure how historically accuracy this is because I only know a little bit about the viking people and I've only ever heard the name Leif Erikson on Spongebob 😶. But I thinks it's cool already. It's gonna be ruthless and graphic you can tell. Battles, adventure, terrains, etc. I mean Leif's discription of eating ice to survive starvation and such got me on board. And I love the tall tales of that sea beast and the edge of the world being not far behind it. It sheds light on the time period. What they know in this time period, what they have to go on based off of stories being passed down. Which I need, cause we have it so good I tend to forget the harshness others had to go through. Just such amazing things here. I'm really looking forward to the rest.

Hurray, we're starting Vinland Saga! Yes, studio WIT does Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan (up until season 3, season 4 will be done by studio Mappa). I haven't finished the first season of Vinland Saga yet, but it's very atmospheric and captivating. Hope you enjoy it!

It's definitely historically inspired, although in many cases it's very loosely connected to actual history.

I only heard about the series, but i dont know much about it, only that is is good. So from the first episode it seem to be grounded in history. Leif Erikson was a real person. The "first" to discover america. Thats why he got the feathered hat as he talked to the children. So i guess vinland is somewhere on americas east coast. i guess somewhere north, because greenland is also north. Norse Mythology has already some part in this story, with Jormungandr named by one of the children. The Jormundgandr is the world serpent big enough to coil around midgard several times. At this point i wonder if this goes more fantasy, with norse and maybe old american monsters. I guess we will see. The child father, Thors, is also named after the God of Thunder, and Protector of Mankind, Thor. We might get deeper into their religion, i would like that. I have i theory why Thors saved the salve, maybe he has enough from fighing and killing, and wanted to save him. Also Leif Erikson was a viking. I am not sure if it is the right translation, but you can go on a viking, and then your are a vikingr. Its a long journy by boat. From Norway to England raiding churches? Viking From Sweden to Turky to trade? Viking Its not only for battle. King Harald was also a real person that became the first King of Norway. Also slaves, well ... we should be happy that most countries got more civilized so they dont use them anymore. Early there where aaaalot that used them.
