A Silent Voice: The Movie - reaction & review

Hey everyone!!!  Here's my reaction and review of A Silent Voice!  Thanks to Netflix, I had a feeling the tone would be heavy on this one...but I had no idea just how profound it would be!  I really liked the way that it didn't take any black-and-white easy ways out with the story, but rather attempted to show things from many different perspectives.  There's a lot to learn from the idea that bullying a bully is also very harmful!  Even though I absolutely could not stand to see our sweet girl get treated so cruelly!  I couldn't believe some of the twists towards the end, although looking back they really built up the reasoning behind it, so it did make sense!  All in all, I loved this movie and found it to be a great blend of thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and heartwarming!  Thanks so much for the recommendation you guys!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Aw thank you so much for making the jump to my other tier, that's awesome and I really appreciate it!!! ^_^ Very true that it's not possible to explore too many details of the characters within the time limits of a movie - I actually had no idea this was a manga first! It sounds like the book offers a bit of a different perspective on certain scenes, I will try to check it out! Thanks!

I love this movie (so much that as soon as I saw that you reacted to it on the higher tier I just had to upgrade) but as with all movies based on other media they left out a lot of details about the character's background or personalities because of time constraints. If you have the opportunity I recommend you read the manga it gives you a totally different perspective into the interactions between the characters. For example, in the manga, the scene in the bridge where Ishida pushes everyone away feels very different.

Hahah thank you! I definitely got teary here and there, I guess I was just able to manage the floodgates a bit better than usual :P So very true that everyone (particularly when you're growing up) does bad things - some worse than others as the movie shows, but even staying silent when you see your friends being hurtful contributes to the problem. (Sadly, I've been there too.... :/) Ishida unfortunately did have to feel the weight of his actions personally, I think, before he could really process how awful he had been to others. And you couldn't be more right that when you're in that place of loneliness and isolation, whether it's because you unworthy or whatnot, that's exactly when you need friendship and interaction!! I'm so glad your friend was able to really find himself by socializing more and making friends!!! Everyone needs their own Body Improvement Club lol!!!! (Even if their bodies don't need improvement, just the bros alone are worth joining!) Oh my gosh, that last scene with the X's really did it for me. And yes, everyone was gossiping, but also talking about casual non-harmful things, some were just doing their own thing, etc. There will always be bad things out there, but when someone closes themselves off, they close off ALL the good, and all the just silly/unimportant, along with the bad. (This is exactly how I got into my post-movie rant in the reaction, sorry lol!) It is really sad to think that they are folks out there - young or otherwise - who feel that suicide is the way out. I agree with you and hope they find someone or something that makes a difference in their lives!!!!!!!! Reaching out, redemption, and friendship are key for sure! And often, going on living can seem overwhelming compared to the other option, but there is always ALWAYS a way out. Definitely not a petty note lol, but you're right that the hairstyles are super cute!!!!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!!

The music was beautiful! I'd love to rewatch it again, movies like this tend to have lots of things to notice the second time around!!!!!

I hope you enjoy watching this along with me when you are able to next week!!! I'll be curious to hear what you thought! Hahahahaha!!!!! That's awesome about the search results! To be fair, I'd definitely pay to see Shrek The Third by Makoto Shinkai!!! :P

This movie was a tear jerker. Im impressed your mascara stayed intact. My hats off to you πŸ‘. This movie had so many elements with so many characters. Everyone might think of themselves as a saint. Being young we do bad things from time to time. Those times are normal and above all we think we're not horrible for them. Like Kawaii (the blonde) that sided & went along with what every body else was doing. I think she genuinely felt she wasn't bullying. You could be a nice person with not so nice ppl and think you're above being part of the hurtful problems. But tolerating what others do is enough to make you what they are. I've been that person πŸ–πŸ˜₯. Ishida was a mean bully but he's relatable cause he isn't a bad person. His past actions do not compare to who he's become now. More understanding and kind. The kids were horrible ,but he is proof people change. Sometimes people get a taste of what they've been giving out and learn the hard way, which gives them empathy. And that leads to understanding. Sometimes feeling bad or lonely for too long can put you in a place like Ishida. And interaction can be the last thing you want (in Ishida's case: something he probably didn't think he deserved). But interaction is the thing you need. Especially with friends. That's why it's so important to have friends. I've felt that way, then joining clubs and making friends made that feeling disappear. A friend of mine had a depressing period in his younger life, and his mom had him go out and make friends. And he explained that huge leap in socializing helped him be the happiest person he is today! This is exactly why I love ppl like the Body Improvement Club. πŸ’ͺ ❀ I loved the feeling the movie brought out at the end when all the X's fell. And people were talking about Ishida, ppl on other topics, people goofing off, being silly and happy. Cause that's life. It goes on and it's as happy as you want to make it. It's sad being so young and thinking of yourself as useless, especially to the extent of ending life. I've been sad but suicide never was a thought because it's scary to do. So to think kids feel this way is downhearted. But i hope they come across someone who will make a difference to them. πŸ™ I think simply it's about reaching out, redemption & the importance of understanding friendship. Leaving on a petty note the woman have really nice hairstyles in this movie. Very pretty πŸ’‡

I never got around to watching this - I think I was left a little emotionally disappointed in Your Name and that turned me off on watching the OTHER big emotional anime of that year (though I think my reaction is an exception to the usual). I hear from sources I trust that it's better, so here's hoping. Gonna have a good time watching this after my work week. See you on Tuesday! Funny note: I forgot what the name of Your Name was, so I searched "body swap anime movie" and the top two results were Your Name and Shrek The Third. Yup. Nailed it. The next classic from Makoto Shinkai, starring Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz.

Thanks so much Adam! I'm sorry to hear you dealt with bullying like this personally. >.< Interesting that the sense of conformity in the culture has ties to bullying like we see here in the movie, I never thought of it that way. Thanks for clearing that up about the doctor scene! This was the animation studio where that attack happened?! Oh no! Their work is gorgeous. Very true that the movie showcases how we think, learn, grow and change over time - but some develop differently and don't move past some kid-like ways of thinking. I hope you loved my reaction! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm glad you finally watched it. You had a pretty similar reaction that i did. I was bullied pretty badly in elementary school so it hit home. The light at the end i think is supposed to represent the light at the end of the tunnel. I believe the doctor scene was him telling her that she'd lost hearing in one of her ears. That's why she stopped using the one hearing aid and why she was covering her ear and making noise because she realized she couldn't hear it. Unfortunatly bullying like this in Japan is especially bad with their culture since conformity is a big thing there. Suicide is another topic that is not talked enough about. Of course the wonderful Kyoani did an amazing job with the animation. It's a shame their studio was firebombed last year. Watching something like this reminds you of how your outlook was when you were young and how it develops and changes as you get older and if you're lucky you are like Shoyo and you change and try to do the right thing, but others like Ueno don't develop that "adult" sense of what is right and wrong.
