Watchmen 1x01 "It's Summer and We're Running out of Ice" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 1 of Watchmen!  I had no idea when/where this would be set after having seen the movie, but I have to say, it's a very clever and interesting story they've built here!  It's interesting to see how some of the details from the story we all know, like Rorschach, have been sort of twisted into something else.  I really love our main character so far!  And that story at the beginning was heartbreaking!!!  Just what in the heck did all that mean at the end, then?!  Guess we'll find out!  Really excited to see more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Oh wow, no kidding!!!!!! That's awesome! Thanks for the info, that is a very fun fact :D

Fun Fact: Bass Reeves, the Black sheriff in the silent film in the beginning was a real person. He was the inspiration behind The Lone Ranger:)

Yay!!!!! That is so awesome that you're writing about parts of this show for your Master's thesis! I'm really happy you're watching along with me, and I appreciate all the info! I was so hoping that some knowledgeable individuals would fill in some of those gaps I wasn't sure about! Thank you for all the help! It's good to know that the graphic novel isn't exactly required reading in order to understand what's going on, although I would love to check it out at some point. I was so afraid that the scenes we saw in Tulsa in the 20s might be actual events, but I figured I would have heard of something that massive happening at some point, so I wasn't sure. I'll get more into this in the other comments here, but I couldn't agree more about the way that history is shaped by those who control the narrative. :( I was heartbroken watching that scene, and I'm even more heartbroken to know it really happened!!! I'm going to move on to your other comments now so we can discuss it more - thank you again!!!

It has been a while since I read the graphic novel, so perhaps I missed that Rorschach was racist. I thought he hated everybody equally.

I'm just more than a little shocked that we don't learn about it in school...good example of how power controls the historical narrative.

Gotta say, I was more than a little shocked to learn that the Tulsa race massacre actually really happened.

One more quick thing. I wouldn't say that this is a loose approximation of Rorschach, more like an actually realistic portrayal of his ideas in the 21st century. Alan Moore has said countless times that his character is meant to be how a man like Batman would really exist. He's not sane, safe, or realistic about justice. He is definitely both racist and sexist, more overtly in the graphic novel. Also, the newspaper that Rorschach sent his journal to was a right-wing leaning paper. That's why it was so intensely picked up by alt-right white supremacists. Also, Angela (the main character) is definitely still a fully legalized police officer. She is just at the level of a detective or a higher level of police officer than the yellow-mask grunt police officers. Same with Looking Glass, Red Scare, and Panda (and Pirate Jenny, but I don't know if they've said her name yet). :D

My dear love! I am actually writing some Masters thesis work about this show. It's phenomenal for a lot of reasons that I'm excited for you to experience. I will say that the show does follow the graphic novel more, but that isn't to say that you MUST read the graphic novel to understand. The show does a pretty good job of explaining the main differences between the two narratives. If you're ever confused past the "in-show" point of explanation, I would be happy to help! <3 Also, that first scene is a real event. The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. It is the single worst instance of racial violence ever in this nation. The entire neighborhood, dubbed Black Wall Street, the richest Black neighborhood in the country, was looted and destroyed. It's estimated that around 300 people were killed and buried in mass graves under the city.

The series is set well after the events of the graphic novel and movie (they were set in the 80's). The movie was fairly close, apart from the ending, where there was a major change. I figured I would mention that as it will refer to some things you have not seen in the movie. But it does fill in the gaps so you don't have to read the graphic novel
