Mob Psycho 100 1x08 "The Older Brother Bows ~Destructive Intent~" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to season 1, episode 8!  I was so heartbroken for Mob during the scene where Ritsu is trying to sever the relationship with him!  But like that's gonna stop Mob from protecting his brother!  It was so satisfying to see 100% Mob unleash on the thug guy, but darn that cursed spray that knocked him out...!!  So now we're on the case to go save Ristu from an organization called Claw.  Looks like we've got a dangerous mission ahead!  Great ep, enjoy!  ~ MH

You always have such interesting thoughts to share!!! I'm so glad you explained this, it definitely helps me to get a better understanding of the situation. It's a great point that Mob and Ritsu are parallel in a lot of ways, the difference being Mob's interpretation of his feelings about Ritsu resulting in admiration instead of jealousy or resentment. I noticed that about Mob really only being willing to use his powers when others are in trouble, not when he's in trouble personally. I do agree that it's refreshing to see a protagonist who isn't so focused on honing and increasing their powers, even if in this particular case the avoidance/fear of the powers is taken to a bit of an extreme. Thank you so much!

You asked about our thoughts on Ritsu's true feelings. I think Ritsu is a mirror to Mobu, you see this in basically everything in their lives. Ritsu is talented, smart, athletic, and popular but Mobu has incredible psychic powers. Each wants what the other has, and devalues what they have themselves. Mobu has a complex about being too powerful and dangerous because of his psychic powers, and an inferiority complex about not being able to communicate well with others. Then we see Ritsu use his ability to communicate ,popularity etc, all the things Mobu doesn't have, and he uses them to hurt people. Ritsu gains a guilt complex about the things he has done to people with the social power he has, and has an inferiority complex about his weakness in the form of being unable to use psychic powers. It's not a perfect parallel, but I think in spite of both brothers envying each-other and having complexes about both their strengths and their weaknesses we can see they clearly still care. The parts where the parallels diverge are important too, because in a sense, both of them live in fear of Mobu's psychic powers, and so Mobu is probably the one who suffers more. Also instead of envying, fearing and resenting the areas that Ritsu excels at Mobu instead truly admires his brothers abiities. I think we can chalk this up in some ways to Mobu's apparent neurodiversity. He doesn't easily reach to hate or anger, if anything cruelty is aimed at him. Take the fight with Teru as an example. When fighting Teru he was more worried about Teru's well being than anything it seemed. When he does show his anger, and his animosity, it has always been when others are in danger. (The smile cult members, and Ritsu for example). In contrast to nearly every shounen anime the main character views his power as something he fears rather than something to strive to increase, and that is refreshing even if the degree to which he has formed a complex around it can be unhealthy.
