Mob Psycho 100 1x05 "Ochimusha ~Psychic Powers and Me~" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to season 1, episode 5!  WHOA!!!!  So, whatever we saw in this ep, it was NOT regular 100% Mob!!!!  It was something altogether different!  Just how powerful is Mob?!?!  Also, RIP Dimple!!  And Teru's hair!  So, I have a better idea now of why Mob is so cautious with his powers, aside from Reigan's guidance...there was an incident when he was younger?!?!  The plot thickens!  Great ep, enjoy!  ~ MH

That's such a great point about the way that Mob thinks and processes everything! You're right that the characters are written with such depth. I will go read up about neurodiversity, I hadn't heard that term before today and I'd like to know more about it! The way you've described Mob's thought processes here is really interesting and makes so much sense. Oooh, that's an interesting concept that the "???" reached in this episode is possibly being the chaos of emotions taking over completely. I'm so glad you shared your perspective!!!! It's really interesting!!! Thank you!!! ^_^

I took a lot from this episode. Especially Reigan’s little spiel. It made me less envious of others because I felt better about myself. I honed a hobby I’ve put in the back burner and turned it into a talent w/ practice and more practice. My self esteem raised up 65% that day! :)

One of my favorite things about One's stories is that One writes such human and unique characters. A lot of anime have caricatures of people with surface level feelings. As a neurodiverse person I empathize so deeply with Shigeo. I remember what it was like growing up and not understanding other people, having such a simple view of interpersonal interactions and simply not being able to understand why others would be cruel. You can see Mob's black and white thinking here also, you don't use your powers on others because they're like knives, that is a simple rule that someone like Mob (someone like childhood me) would cling to. It made the world simple and understandable. The world was noisy and messy and people were so confusing. He would extend following that rule to the point where he risked dying, being choked unconscious by another child. It wasn't a rational choice, except in the mind of someone like Mob for whom a world without that rule was far more terrifying, a world where Mob could use his powers however he wanted might be a world he isn't sure he wanted to live in. I can relate to that and also the repression of expression of feelings that leads to bottling your emotions because if you can't read the complexities of social interaction you live in constant fear of doing or saying the wrong thing (let's be honest that's an issue to some degree for all adolescents but far more of an issue for certain categories of neurodiverse children). Then we have the "thing" that appears when Mob is knocked unconscious, and in this episode what or who it is is left entirely up to our interpretation, but to me it seems to signify a sort of state of mind that would terrify someone like me. Essentially agency without limitations. In Mob's explosion facing Dimple he reached 100% rage, and at the end of this episode 100% sadness, but what if the ???% is all of Mob's emotions in control with no limitations? The animal brain if you will, freed from the shackles of reason. The idea of going from repressing and strictly controlling your emotions like many children like I was do (and as a result being accused of being robotic etc) to being completely ruled by the chaos of them would be a terrifying thing for me, especially as a child like Mob. I'm not saying that's accurate to One's intent when writing this arc, but it's what I took from it when I watched the episode. :) Just thought I'd share my perspective.

Ohhhhhh okay....that makes sense! Got it, so the thing inside Mob, not Mob, was what hurt him. Thanks for clearing it up!!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

I think the 100% are a gauge of his feelings repressed, so this time it was sadness that reached 100%. And when the Brother said "That wasnt nii-san" for me means that that, creature, was what hurt them in the past, not his brother.
