Attack on Titan 3x10 "Friends" reaction & review

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! That makes so much more sense about the "punching" Levi scene, it definitely wasn't as clear in the anime but makes sense now that you explain it! Woooowww that actually sounds amazing, the arc that you just described with Levi, particularly the part where Mikasa is one of the only ones sticking up for him! That's a shame that couldn't have been in the anime too!

A key difference in this arc in the manga, as well as a lot of other stuff that is cut out is that in the manga early on in the arc they discover that Historia is the queen whilst she is still with the Survey Corps. So when Levi tells her and the squad about the plan Erwin is going forward with to overthrow the government and put Historia on the throne, Historia being the empty husk of herself she is at the start of the arc declines and says she's unfit for the role. This leads to Levi grabbing her by her collar and choking her whilst basically telling her she has no choice but to either do it or run away and that they're gonna do everything possible to make her do what she wants. So after lots of physical and verbal intimidation Historia agrees to do it after out of fear. This is why her punching Levi in the manga was a lot more satisfactory in the manga since it was her way of getting back at him for how he treated her. In the manga it's also Dimo Reeves, the merchant boss who Kenny killed, who tells her to punch Levi once she becomes queen, he assures her that Levi is a good man but she should still get back at him for it. It's hard to explain but in the manga he has a much bigger role in assisting the Survey Corps with their plans in this arc. Also Levi's harsh treatment of Historia leads to his squad losing their trust in him with them not being fully ready to obey his orders to kill people once they start getting attacked by Kenny's squad, which is why Jean apologizes to him for hesitating in that scene earlier on in the season. Also this was also a good development moment for Mikasa since in the manga when the rest of the squad loses their trust in him she's the only one who speaks up saying that she's always found him weird and unpleasant but believes that they should still stick with him and obey him since it's for the best. Showing that she's able to put aside the grudge she's had for him ever since he beat the life out of Eren in the courtroom in season 1, for the sake of working towards a goal. Compared to in the anime where she still keeps the exact same grudge towards him and add in additional scenes of her freaking out and screaming about Eren compared to in the manga where she's much more composed and logical even after Eren is kidnapped. Basically the anime completely negates all the development she gets in this arc. Anyways those were just a few ramblings about some of the faults I have with this arc in the anime compared to the manga.

Ohhhhhh!!! Thanks for pointing that out! I feel bad about Kenny too, I would have loved to have had him around for a while! Good point about the salute too!! Nice!! Yes, so true about the nature of the "bad guys" in this show....grey areas seem to be the running theme this season! I hadn't thought about the significance of Sannes' words to Hange, but I really can see it in a whole new light now! That's a good point about Kenny, it really seemed like he just wanted to understand it rather than the desire to actually have those qualities directly. I'm so happy you loved my reaction!!!!! Remember the guy Kenny was speaking with during the prayer of Uri ? Sannes. It was the guy Hangi and Levi were torturing at the beginning of the season. He really believes in the King, and "that is why I am able to do anything asked of me" as he said. I am kinda sad about Kenny's death, he was an interesting character, too bad he died so quickly. I really LOVE the fact that Historia is saluting the people with this particular salute, a military one, but one that has a greater meaning for the scouts (and that resonate so well in Erwin voice) : shinzou wo sasageyo / dedicate your heart. And Levi smiled ! That is a rare sight ! Furthermore he was thanking all of his team, it was clearly more profound than just a thanks. And Mikasa was smirking all along ahah, a little payback. Great reaction, thanks !

This is one of my favorite episodes in the anime. Since season 1 we knew there was a bigger picture, that there was something shady about the government and religion, and it gave a feeling that there's something more to the show than meets the eye. But I always assumed that the corrupt higher ups are the real evil and we just have to reveal and confront them. However, in this episode when we learn more about Uri and Frieda, and that they believed and preached about peace and love, even though they acknowledged you can't avoid the violence in this world, it all shows us that things are not black and white in this show. We condemned the interior police for all the killings, plotting, they crossed a moral line, but to some extent so did our characters in the survey corps, as Armin said, they fought other people just because they belong to a group with different beliefs. Sannes from the military police said he believed it was all justified and he believes in his king. It gives a whole new meaning to what he told Hange: "This role of ours.. there's an order to it. Good luck, Hange!" When you're in power, can you bring love and peace peacefully? Also I don't think Kenny really wanted to be compassionate, he didn't really understand the mindset fully. He just wanted to know why people in power believe in that and if it can change his views as well. Until the end, he said he didn't know what made him friends with Uri, but if it wasn't Uri's power suppressing Kenny, it wouldn't have gone the same way. He believed in power until the end and told his grandfather, that there's no reason to live in this world, although he didn't want to die in the end either. I think he wanted Uri's ultimate power just to understand his meaning in life and why it is to seek compassion. When he dies in this episode, he realizes that Uri's compassion was just his driving force in life, just like power was for Kenny, and that everyone had their own meaning in life. Loved the reaction! :) I'm so excited for the remainder of the show!!!
