Attack on Titan 3x03 "Old Story" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of season 3, episode 3.   Okay so Historia's background is absolutely HEARTBREAKING!!!  How is she such a sweet well-adjusted girl?!?!
We learn a lot of other stuff in this ep too, like the story of Smith's father, and the way in which Titans become "Intelligent Titans"!  No wonder they wanna eat Eren so badly!!!  Also, fingers crossed that whoever is about to find them in the woods is not dangerous!!  We could really use a win, you know?  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

In the manga the order of events are different. In the manga this conversation happens when Jean and Armin are acting as doubles for Eren and Mikasa so Levi and Mikasa could catch the merchants who are after them. Meanwhile Eren and Historia are still in hiding at one of the Survey Corps hideouts, they're sat at a table together, Eren looking a bit awkward since he doesn't know Historia all to well and Historia just looking distant and dead inside. Also at this point they had already found out that the Reiss family was the true royal family and that Historia was a valid candidate for the throne. Eren: "I'm sorry I failed as a titan" Historia: "Why are you apologizing to me?" Eren: "Huh? Ymir you want to rescue her now right?" Historia: "Rescue. I feel like it wouldn't be a rescue anymore. It's like you said, back then Ymir chose what life she would lead. I've got not no right to interfere and she doesn't need me to. All I have now are some vague facts about my birth and a huge role that I don't see myself remotely cut out for" Eren: "So what do you want to do?" Historia: "I don't know. I envy you, Eren. No matter how hard it gets you always know what you want. It's not just you, everyone's that way. They all have something important enough to them that they'd risk their lives for it. Ymir saw the real me. The me that chose to join the Survey Corps. The me that I didn't even know about. But after Ymir disappeared I stopped understanding who I am, and what I want. You probably can't understand how that feels." Eren: "No I totally understand. We both live in this absurd world where if we don't do something, we'll lose everything. We don't have time to feel conflicted. Right now Armin's taking on a dangerous missions as your body double. Shouldn't you be more worried about him?" Historia: "Sorry but to be honest I don't see why. Christa would've probably been worried for everyone. Christa Lenz was a good girl. But Historia Reiss. Historia's parents never loved her, nobody did. Quite the opposite, no one wanted her to be born. Her story isn't even especially unusual, there a lots of kids like her in the underground. So? Everyone was disappointed right? That the real me was this empty. That I'm nothing like the good girl Christa Lenz was." Eren: "No that's not true. I don't know about the others but I didn't really like the old you. It felt like you always had a forced expression on your face. It was unnatural a little creepy honestly. But there's something I like about you now. You're just normal. Just a normal girl who's absurdly honest."

What you said about Historia being such a nice girl despite her upbringing I think is a misconception you've gotten, not your fault tho its mainly due to the anime because it cuts a lot of stuff including scenes and important character moments from this arc in the manga which is a lot more fleshed out. So to clarify Christa is the perfect nice girl persona Historia has spent most of her life living as, to help others as much as possible. Though that's all a facade, Historia on the other hand is empty and suicidal, having no personality or desires of her own, Ymir is the only person who saw through her act completely and calls her out on it in that snowy mountain flashback in season 2 when Historia was faking trying to save Daz so she could essentially commit suicide and die keeping up her facade of the perfect girl Christa who would die for others. The manga has a much more in-depth conversation between Eren and Historia at the start of this arc but unfortunately the anime skips over most of it which you've already seen. I'll link the chapter it's in but I'll also type the conversation between them out for ya in case you'd just prefer to read it like that. The chapter: https://mangaseeonline.us/read-online/Shingeki-No-Kyojin-chapter-54.html

I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's interesting about the first flashback, I totally missed that but it makes sense now! Glad I'm not the only one who thought that about Historia's mom! That's an excellent point about Christa's real personality too! He's not exactly a poet about it haha, but he gets the point across! I can't wait to know the answer to my question about the first intelligent Titan!!!!!! XD I'm so happy you liked my reaction and I hope you love my future ones too!!!!!!!! Thank you!

Melissa Moore

It was so nice to have it clearly revealed! I don't think I would have ever guessed that Ymir eating Reiner and Bertholdt's friend is precisely what brought her back to being human. Although I think I did postulate early on that maybe Titans ate humans and turned them like zombies LOL! Thanks for introducing the naming, too - Pure Titan, Mindless Titan, Shifter, etc.! Good to know! Good to know about that comment being metaphorical, I was trying so hard to pay attention to anything I thought sounded important hahah!!! Thanks about my perspective on Historia! So sad that nearly our whole crew had awful childhoods!!! Can't wait to see what unfolds over the next few eps!!!!!!!!! XD Thanks!

Melissa Moore

Yeah, she's already decided she'll be skipping the OP for the first five episodes

Yeah, avoid the intro for the second part of Season 3. The clues and plot points are too obvious. You will know when you reach the right time to watch it.

David Caine

I can say that in time, all of your questions will be answered! Even if it isn't this season aha. As a heads up, since I know you film ahead, I've seen a few other reactors to this show and some of them (for example, Blindwave) said they kind of regretted watching the Season 3 Part 2 Intro as it was kind of spoilery. When I watched it I also thought it gave a lot away so I wasn't as surprised when things happened. So I'd recommend waiting at the very least a few episodes as to be more surprised by things (even though it sucks waiting, I know!).

RationallySassy

You'll find soon out how the Intelligent Titans came to be. Keep watching. 😁

Czar

omg.. cant wait when ''that thing'' will happen :D oh boy that will be spicy :D great reaction :) wow.. such a sad backstory.. almost cant believe it..

Dethrox

Btw, btw, btw... Am I the only one who saw any similarities to little Erwin and little Iida?? Maybe it was just the super serious expressions both of them had as kids 😂 I was kinda expecting little Erwin to start hand chopping the air!

Preston Elkins

Well now I just feel so special for having my comment mentioned in the intro 😂 Speaking of which, one of the spoilers Tom was talking about in my initial version of that comment was talking about Historia's lonely upbringing. It is weird, given how isolated she was and how cold her mother was (you raised suspicions on what she was doing with those fancy clothes and heading into the city at night... I don't know the details, but she was explicitly stated to be Rod Reiss's mistress, who knows if they kept that up or if she possibly had other "clients"~), how she ended up being such a well adjusted and kind human being. Although, like David said, a lot of that was merely an front, her acting out as "Christa Lenz." Another spoiler in that comment was talking about Erwin and his father. Erwin has always been a badass character, but I love the backstory they gave him: It adds a whole new dynamic to his persistence in finding the truth! And his father's hypothesis on the king altering the people's memories is really... Intriguing. But this is still only a hypothesis so far, there's no concrete evidence for it! At least... Not yet, eh?

Preston Elkins

Another episode loaded with STUFF. A lot of it ! Now that we have seen him, Erwin's dad is most likely dead, yeah. It was him in the first (I think the first ?) flashback when Sannes was being tortured : "A teacher too smart for his own good" he said, and the image shown us Sannes and another soldier, with a torch, very close to Erwin's father. He likely had a very painful ending... About Historia's mum, I had the same initial thought ahah. And about Historia being "such a nice person", remember the first episode, when she said about herself "that good girl Christa is gone", and Eren saying that it is better, because her behavior felt forced and unatural, to the point of making him sick, as he so elegantely point out (the tact of this guy... :p ). Now, there is a shift between her previous persona, how she was perceiving herself, how the others saw her, etc. Maybe Eren nailed it in the end, just a stupidely honest but normal girl ! And of course, you ask this very pertinent question : If a pure titan became intelligent by eating a Shifter (tom already explained that one, damn he is fast !), then how did it start ?! Good question. But you know the show, and its tendency to withhold answer :p And I agree with tom here, the "next in line" comment was most likely metaphorical. No such thing as bad or good guys here (even if from our point of view, we know who we are rooting for... right ? :p ) I feel like I'm saying this a lot, but can't wait for the next episodes, there is always awesome things ahead with this show. Thanks for the reaction, it was great !

And the Titan power mechanics revealed! I almost spoiled it at the end of S2 with regards to Ymir, because all the clues were there but I forget that it wouldn't be as easy to figure out when you're not involved in the community trying to find clues as I was when the content was coming out. But yeah, so Ymir was a Mindless Titan, or Pure Titan which is the official term I guess, wandering around for 60 years as we know, turned into a Titan when she was kicked off the wall. And by chance she managed to eat Reiner and Bertholdt's friend, and since he was already an Intelligent Titan (by the way the fan term for that is Shifter, a Shifter being someone who can turn into a Titan and retain intelligence (Eren, Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, Ymir), Ymir turned back into a human and gained his power to turn into a Titan. It all kind of gives you an insight into why Titans might eat people in the first place The comment Sannes made about how there's always someone next in line to take their role was more metaphorical, he was basically talking about how depending on what the status quo is someone will be the one behind bars when the new order takes place. He used to be the military police member questioning people, torturing them and throwing them in jail but now Hange is doing it. He's essentially telling Hange that the burden is on her now. You're spot on with Historia being surprisingly well-adjusted given how she was raised, it's interesting to see how different characters react because apart from like Sasha Connie and Jean pretty much all of them have really messed up childhood. I mean, even Connie had his childhood kind of taken when his family was turned into Titans lol. Overall a good episode but I can't wait for you to get to the juicy stuff in just a few more episodes
