Attack on Titan 2x07 "Close Combat" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of season 2, episode 7.  I loved watching Eren flash back to the times when everything was "normal" (as normal as we can get on this show haha) and seeing everyone interact with all the knowledge I now have of the Titan characters.  It's interesting to me that Reiner and Bertholdt, especially, seemed so genuine in their treatment of their comrades!  It's crazy to think they were so dedicated to such a deadly mission, yet I can't help but feel they haven't been putting on their actual personalities this whole time.  Also, I wonder if all three of them were planning to get Eren on their side all along, since they were pretty gracious about teaching him fighting techniques!
Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

No way, that's such an insane and awesome fun fact!!!!!!!!!! It's so entirely bizarre to think of these young kids just hanging out among the humans they just set out to completely destroy. I'll have to go back and look now. Thank you so much!

Fun fact! Reiner, Bertholt, and Annie make a little cameo early in season 1. I can’t remember if it was episode 2 or 3, but in one of those episodes, there is a scene where the narrator explains that the refugees were put to work in the fields to grow more food, but they were unsuccessful. At some point in that scene, you can see young Reiner and Bertholt in one of the shots. Also, at the beginning of the scene where Mikasa force feeds bread to Eren, you can see a young Annie receiving a piece of bread from one of the officers. Just little cameos, but knowing what Reiner and Bertholt did just days earlier makes it interesting to see them blending in among the people whose lives they just ruined.

Tom and David - I know you deleted your comments here but I am actually SO glad you let me know not to watch the text mid-episode scene for ep 10! I was able to watch 9 with no problem and I have no idea what was in 10 cause I looked away, so I'm all good to go :D

Melissa Moore

Oh wow!!!!! That's an awesome piece of trivia! That's too bad about the poor unknown soldier that got eaten! >.< Also.......I guess not yet....??? Am I supposed to be looking for something??? Or is it something I have to look forward to that should go unspoken of?! :O

Melissa Moore

LOL!!! No worries at all, you are so right, and I'm glad it's amusing and not irritating haha! You know what's funny? Before this episode, I never really noticed that the Armored Titan had armor....!!! :O As soon as I noticed that the one with Reiner's hair had armor, it was easier to remember lol. For some reason, Colossal threw me off because they are both huge :P Thank you so much!!! I'm so happy you're enjoying my reactions!!!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

No worries, I didn't remember it either and I just watched the ep haha. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed he looked a little different! It makes him stand out more, I think, but it does look different from the way he was first presented!!

Melissa Moore

Yes, such a cliffhanger lol! Thanks for clarifying all that - I thought maybe they knew Eren was/was going to be a Titan and that's why they were teaching him. Then it just makes them more likable that they went out of their way to help him anyway.....ahhhh why did they all have to be Titans lol?! Thanks for pointing that out about Reiner and the armor on his leg, too - I'm sure I didn't catch that! I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!!!!!! ^_^

Also, as far as I am aware, the other person Bertholdt ate was just an unlucky, nameless and faceless soldier.

One nice little touch to the fight scenes: there's a video of an mma coach reviewing this fight as part of a video on fights in fantasy shows and anime. One of things he said impressed him most about this particular fight was how it demonstrated imperfect techniques and grapples not working; and how that demonstrated much better understanding of martial arts than what's usually shown in shows like this. Just goes to show how much thought and detail went into this show! Also... Not yet, eh?

Armored vs Colossal is pretty easy to remember, if you think about it, one has armor, and the other is huge and has no skin XD. I'm sorry, I just found it amusing that you confused the two :) no shade, just wanted to share my amusement. Loving the reactions as usual.

There are several things. First you see Historia and Ymir standing with images of titans being projected over them, then you see all of the squad standing atop the wall, but Reiner and Berthold are missing. Then you see the colossal titan and the armored titan, spoiling that they would return this season. Then you see the armored titan and you see Eren transform and go in for a punch against the armored titan. Even though most of the scenes you see of the armored and colossal titan aren't the way they appear in the anime, it spoils that they will be returning and that Eren will be fighting the armored. Make sense? It's not SUPER spoilery (not like Season 3 part 2, omg) but enough to avoid so everything comes as a shock.

ok.. can someone explain why was intro spoiler-ish ?? definitely not a single Reiner and Berthold as titan revealation.. atleast i didnt saw one.. i was thinking more about that.. ''light'' thats was in all living creatures inclusing titans.. :D

Yeah my bad, Mikasa did indeed have second thoughts and it wasn't as cold blooded as I thought. I don't remember that at all but it has been a long time since I watched this. I've always disliked the change to Colossal Titans animation, mostly just something that doesn't look right to me.

Aaaaah, I feel your frustration, this is literally one of the worst cliffhanger of the serie ! About some of yours questions, like, why they were like that with Eren, teaching him how to fight. Well, at that time, as far as we know, Eren was just a random dude (a fiercy one sure, but nothing special), who happened to befriend Reiner and Berthold. At that time, nobody knew that Eren was a titan (Armin was thinking about that in season one, when he was on the tree, trying to figure who the spy was). You might have missed it, but Reiner couldn't run like that at the begining of the episode. There is a short scene where we see him purposively breaking the armor at the back of his leg, just before he started sprinting (Mikasa tried to cut the back of his leg at the beginning, only to failed). This scene with Annie is really cool, it's too bad they haven't incorporate more of this during season 1. That would have shown why Eren was so hesitant to fight Annie, or even wouldn't believe that she was the female titan, I think there was a real respect between them. Such a great reaction, thank you !
