My Hero Academia 4x22 "School Festival Start!!" full reaction

Hey everyone!  Here is my reaction/review for season 4, episode 22.  This episode was great but SO frustrating for me - who am I supposed to root for?!  Here I've been saying what a great hero Gentle would make, but if you look at his background that we see in this episode, it's like the universe arranged for him to go down this path!!  And at the end of the day, was this scheme really worth Gentle and LaBrava losing each other?!?!?!  So many questions!!!  Great ep!  PLUS ULTRA!!!!  Enjoy!   ~  MH

Awww!!! Watching my reactions always makes me cry too lol....fun fact, whenever I'm editing, I just cry along with myself during the sad parts!!!! T_T Yeah a hacker quirk would have made sense for sure! Lol yes, I didn't expect him to be so young either!!!!! Once they showed him at 22 it made more sense that he's probably late 20s/30s now. Yeah the ending was tough to watch, so sad that it had to end this way!!!!!!!! Really wish they could be together......I think they need each other right now. We'll see what happens!!!!!!!!

Better late than never!!! :D Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yes, I think you're right about what Izuku meant. I have no idea why I took it so literally in the moment lol because that makes total sense; this was the first "morally gray" fight he really had, at least to this extent. (Stain came off much more villain-ish!) You worded it so well; their ideals are not that dissimilar!!! It will be interesting to see how this affects Izuku's perspective in the future!

probably the first episode i cried.. (while watching you watch.. not me alone but im watching it straight after i watch it myself) hmm very interesting quirk.. i though its something about hacking but after her backtory and the fact they said they using it to escape maybe some stalker quirk ?? then i though she will affect Midoriya to.. like work for him or something.. :D didnt expect this.. also what the heck ?? how old is the guy ?? :D i though he is.. after his fifties :D ... (white hair) when i saw him walking on spring day.. and subs said 22 i was like.. whaat ?? now it looks like im old.. and im 26.. :((( either way... i didnt like the ending.. i also think they should be together.. Gentle think when they get separeted she would start doing worse crimes but no.. she would straight kill herself and that should not happen.. no way.. :/

Gosh, late to the party. A thought, when Izuku said this was the toughest fight he has ever fought ... I don't think he meant physically. I think it was because they where so similar in intent, they where driven by what they thought was a noble cause that would lead to a better world, unlike nearly all his past opponents who did it for malicious or avaricious purposes, something easy to stand up to and defy. Even Stain who seemed to believe he would make the world better did it through vile actions, but as you said, Gentle seemed to have no intent to hurt anyone. So I think that is what made this one of Izuku's toughest foughts. To fight someone who's ideals you oppose is easy. But to fight someone who's ideal mere degrees apart from your own, well ... that could be a hard pill to swallow.

Thanks! It was definitely hard to decide who to root for!!! >.< And yes, that was very sad that Gentle's mom was not supportive at all. I can see why that would be frustrating to watch, for sure! My impression of his life was that he sort of couldn't catch a break with family, school, and just luck....not saying folks can't change their lives if they're determined enough, but it's a good illustration of how sometimes life just HAPPENS to you and it's very hard (not impossible, but hard) to push back against it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Don't be sorry, thank you for all this great info!!!!!! I think this is a very interesting question - while it's heartwarming that Gentle and LaBrava have impacted each other's lives so much, it's worth thinking about to analyze whether or not their relationship is healthy for both of them! Thank you for posing such an interesting question and for sharing your thoughts!!!!!!!!

So recently read an article about gentle and la brava and the question is do you think they're a toxic relationship to one another or a dependent relationship? They explain it by what they saw in this episode "But is this love... healthy? While it's clear in many ways that both La Brava and Gentle Criminal's love for each other visibly enriches their lives and makes them feel value in their own actions, are the two of them too dependent on one another?" In the article it explains how la brava was in a deep depression and had secluded her self in her room implying her wanting to end her life until she came across gentles videos and was inspired by him they said that the episode said how she was fangirl who wanted to meet gentle but also it was because of his videos she's still around and then gentle he had the exact mindset of everyone else he wanted to become a hero but kept getting rejected by other schools then the incident where that person and he also instinctively stepped in and tried helping but he ended up stopping the other hero who trying to save them while hurting them in the process resulting in him getting kicked out of school and his home and even being forgotten by everyone in these unique circumstances they end up meeting and they go on explaining basically how they need each other and if they were separated would detrimental to both of them "this my attempt at trying sum up the article if you wanna read it here's a link if your interested https://www.cbr.com/my-hero-academia-la-brava-gentle-criminal-toxic-relationship/amp/" they then go on saying basically that they were both depressed and needed each other and if they were separated if would be bad, this is what I think for one thing both of there situations are different from each other and if they were to get separated it would be sad but it wouldn't make them want to take there life if separated that's not how I see it, it was because la brava saw gentles video she wanted to meet him and help with what he was doing and gentle having met la brava makes him want accomplish his goal I think of it as healthy one point that helps this because la brava spent so much time in here room she developed bags under her eyes and she became self conscious about them so when gentle heard this while giving her code name to her he also drew the bags under his eyes with the marker so she wouldn't feel self conscious this my attempt at trying to explain something like this so it might not make the most sense I'd like to know what think about this topic also they mentioned how this scenario is how izukus life might have turned had it been like gentles situation. P.s sorry making this so long 😅😬

As you said you felt like rooting for him don’t worry. A lot of reactors and fanbase in general dislikes deku here despite understanding what he needed to do and people were rooting for them two. Everything was resolved peacefully to a degree at the least. But a bitter sweet end. Details that I like is just how the quirks of characters can speak more on a character. Gentle can “bounce” back from these things but also things flung at his by others can “bounce” off. While still being important to being able to let someone (la brava) into that protective bouncy shell. Another detail that I can relate to with personal life that I dislike thankfully only for a limited time was gentles mom. If you noticed while he was down she was just mentioning about his friend doing good, and also she worded specifically. “The family names” /SON\ is already making it blah blah meaning she’s the type of parent to compare herself to another and wanting to compare the results of her offspring compared to her “rivals” child. She was never supportive. It irks me.

I’m really messed up about this because of seeing his back story and looking at him now knowing he still isn’t trying to be a bad guy. A vigilante probably but still wanting to do good doer 😢 😭 But I also see why they stress you getting your license. Cause u have to do things the right way. He had a quirk that could save. I was thinking what he was thinking and it ended up hurting instead of helping. Yet, he still could have turned out BAD with what life has thrown.

Manny

Exactly!!!!!!!! This is a total gray area.......and good point that this is the first time Izuku has won a battle totally on his own!!!!!!! Good call!

Melissa Moore

Haha that is super cute! Yeah he does some bad stuff but it's soooo hard to dislike him once you know what he's all about.......in my opinion.......really hoping he has a redemption arc!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

😭😭😭😭😭😭

Manny

I wouldn't put it that he wants to be a hero just to be famous he wants to be remember and leave his name in history and to inspire others not for the fame or money

So now that you know La Bravas Quirk, lets talk about Quirks in general. Unlike in other Media, in My Hero Quirks, or Powers, seem are often linked not only to the body but also the psyche of a Person. A Quirk is part of a person, and a Person should not be oppressed because they are born how they are. Skin color, sexual orientation, hair color, or such things. But we see that the society in My Hero fails people a lot. La Bravas Quirk is love, to “use” her Quirk, to be able to be herself, she needs someone to love. She might even experience love and affection differently than others, and surely more strongly. But it does not appear she got a good “Quirk counseling”, or others, that explain how she feels and expresses feelings more strongly. Something we saw also with the Kids in the Episode with Bakugo and Totoroki. Some Quirks are not accepted by their Society, we will see more of that. And now to Gentle, he wanted to be a Hero. Not because he wanted to do good, but he saw how liked Heroes are, and wanted to be one to be famous. Not really a dream that he worked hard for. But he wanted to Help people, but as we saw…it did not work out for him. So his Family got death threats sent to them, and sprayed on their house. They could not pay the bills, so the got evicted, that drove them forcing Gentle to leave. And then….even a classmate, a friend…did not know who he is. For someone who wanted to be famous…that must be the lowest he could feel. So he change his view, if he could not be a famous hero, he would be an infamous Villain. He still had HIS dream…. But over time, after he and La Brava met, it was not only his dream anymore. It was also La Bravas, so he fought with everything he had, for her. To see her Smile A fight to see a Girl smile. Deku too fights for a smile…but as he said, Gentle was the toughest opponent. Not physically, but mentally. Deku must have realized that in order to win. To see a little girls smile…he had to destroy another ones dream… I think this fight… will leave its mark on his view on the world. I guess now you know why the My Hero Community likes Gentle and La Brava.

Kevin

You can't hate them because this is just a product of a flawed hero society that punish u for trying to do the right thing and work against someone Midoryia he also had to walk on other people to get to where he is in the license exam he had to eliminate people how has the same dreams and aspirations to be a hero and be honest this really is Midoryia first toughest fight he beat not just the emotional aspect but he this first person he beat without any help or support

Jarvis Fowlkes

Gentle vandalizes stores and beats up pros bad nacho not bueno nacho I will say it was cute when he gives la Brava her name he makes his eyes darker with eyeliner to make her feel better

Michael Mobley

It was really sad!! And he and LaBrava are so sweet together! I love the connection they have and how much they mean to each other. You're right, it really did feel like one of those protagonist moments!!! I got so confused on who to root for lol!

Melissa Moore

Right!!! That makes sense, thanks for clarifying! It makes total sense that he was referring to the emotional aspect and the moral gray area at work here....as opposed to the definitive "bad guy" nature of others he's fought.

Melissa Moore

Gentles backstory was sad you know he did want to be a hero at one point but he kept getting held back never really making it to the next grade and sad to see how his attempt at helping is what caused his life to go on a downward spiral and basically getting shunned by everyone and la brava didn't do nothing wrong it was just people mocking her behind her back but it was nice to see how they met and I find so kind of him to draw dark rings around his eyes so that she wouldn't feel self conscious anymore about her also you know that moment gentle tried to knock out izuku but it didn't work the way he looked and was talking looked like when the protagonist goes berserk against the person there fighting I mean that's how I saw it

Sirghostfreak

When Izuku tells him that it was his hardest fight, I think he means as far as ideals go. Every villain he's been pitted up against so far was clearly evil. Overhaul, Muscular, Stain and Shigaraki are clearly evil. But even though Gentle did what he did for his own fame, he clearly loved and cared about La Brava.

I also think Midoriya saying he was harder to fight was most likely not meant as his hardest fight, but just because Gentle really isn't that bad of a guy but Midoriya still had to stop him no matter what. So harder mentally but not physically. Gentle and Stain really are quite similar with both having good and understandable ideals but just have wrong way of going about it.

Jonne Korpilahti

I love this show, its actually amazing that it could go from villain basically torturing a child most of her life to villains who were kind of shunned by everyone and just have each other, and then willingly give up after they are beaten. And after all that it still feels like the same show, its amazing.
