I just became your patreon and don't really remember if you have ever mentioned it, but in the episode Hange names the 2 specimen titans (Sawney & Bean) while telling a relevant story, it is an actual folklore about a clan of cannibals with Sawney Bean as the head of that clan.

So it's really amazing to see Jean's character go on this arc of being this snobby teenager who think's people like Eren are just idiots with delusions of grandeur for wanting to fight the titans just to more than likely die a quick and brutal death. Then once he actually has to confront the titans literally on the day before he was supposed to join the military police he has his entire perspective change. He ends up in a position of leadership and holds the burden of being responsible for other peoples lives. As Marco said he's not a very strong person so he can understand how weak people feel, which is the majority of others. He's not super strong like Mikasa, he's not a genius like Armin and he doesn't have the same sort of passion and perseverance as Eren. Though he does a balance of these things. Jean is like the everyman of the show. He's pretty much just a regular person in this story but he steps up when he decides for himself what needs to be done. He's not like Eren who has very strong beliefs and ideology that fighting for freedom is what everyone should be doing and that anyone who doesn't is stupid and cowardly. He knows how terrifying the titans are, and he's scared out of his mind but the battle of Trost showed him what the threat of the titans is actually like, and that running away to the interior out of fear isn't gonna accomplish anything. Since eventually the titans may just end up knocking through all the walls if nothing is done to prevent it. So yeah Jean being the first out of the cadets besides (Eren, Mikasa and Armin obviously) to decide that he's joining the Survey Corps even though his entire character motivation up until that point had been to join the Military Police, has always been one of my favorite moments in season 1. It's especially emotional since he does it as they burn the bodies of the soldiers who died in Trost and he's clasping onto bones not even knowing if their Marco's as he makes the decision is beautiful. Anyways sorry for this really long rant. Just got carried away talking about why I love Jean's character.

Jean really is one of the best developed characters in the story. He really shines this early in season 1 unlike a lot of others characters who slowly have groundwork laid out for them before getting the spotlight later on. So many people when they start the series just expect Jean to be this jackass unlikable character who either disappears eventually or just gets killed off. This is obviously because of his smug personality in the first few episodes and how he would butt heads with Eren. But the reason he was always arguing with Eren wasn't really without basis. Like Annie said the reason the people who get into the top 10 can get into the military police and live in the inner most wall Sina is because it reflects human nature. People naturally want to save themselves so of course the ones who rank the highest are gonna be granted that privilege. Jean is, or was one of those people. He didn't delude himself with the idea of being some sort of hero like he thought Eren was. He's a bit of realist. He simply believed there's no way anyone can defeat the titans so what's even the point of trying. And plus why would anyone want to when if you rank high enough you can just live a nice, comfy live in the interior, which is what he planned on doing. Even if you don't make it into the top 10 you can still join the Garrison and work on the walls without ever having to go outside them. It's not like the Survey Corps has that good of a reputation anyways, as we saw in episode 1. They're known for acting all heroically when going outside the walls but then coming back having achieved nothing and most of the recruits dying on each expedition.

Hange is female in the anime. I checked the first page on amazon for you and there were no spoiler shirts. (i'm caught up with the manga) and in case you are wondering they are only 15 years old.

omg i cant wait for this run.. that is so so EPIC episode :D or episodes.. i dont rememeber how many parts it will take :D but hype is real !! :3 (i think they die like this so i guess they just slash their necks and they ''evaporate'') but im not 100% sure :D also they will show marco's end.. quite later.. :/

I think I'll never understand how someone who wrote a character so great as Erwin and so complex as Eren is able to have Jean as his favorite character but that's what Isayama said. I googled attack on titan shirt doubting but that was a spoiler of the end of the this season that you would figure it out just seen the shirt and suppose to be a twist, so be cautios.
