Lira begins the Rulers challenge...first with a powerful Lidi amazon...made more powerful with special drugs. the rulers challenge is a series of combat tests that a warrior goes through to show they are a true warrior. And to gain respect of the Pate generals and Pate people. The ruling Empress...or Emperor...asks a worthy warrior to take the challenge with them...if they BOTH survive...they face each other to the death.Lira and the previous Pate Empress...Nna Rann...performed these challenges before facing each other to the death. Now Lira and Christy Dumont will do the same.

Good observation. Lira has done this challenge before, and barely survived it. the gladiators she will be facing have been augmented.Lira knows,though, the sure way to get support away from Tong, is to take this challenge. also, like you said, if Lira dies, Larare will be the one calling the shots.
