Re: Nixon, two words... "Survivors guilt" They're all Nazis. Period. They had to give a pledge to Adolf Hitler as the supreme leader--down to the last person. If they refused they'd be killed or put in a death camp. Is there room for sympathy, yes. I am waiting to see how this "bad Nixon" plays out. Don't hate Germans. Hate the Nazis (and every German of age who could have known what was going on their own backyard). Bottom line, the locals knew. Also bottom line, you don't get to live in the 3rd Reich and get a pass. Period. It is his fault. They either knew or ignored, period.

The president in office at the beginning of the war was Roosevelt, and the scene had more meaning because he was the president for three terms. He became president during the depression and arguably guided the country back on track. The president that took over was Truman. He's the one who decided to drop the nuclear bomb on the Japanese.

Many people in those towns had family members, men and women, who worked in the camps. There are a couple of sad but really good movies that cover families living near the Concentration camps during this time. "Boy in the Stripe Pajamas" and "The Zone of Interest"

Also. The camps were ran and controlled by the Nazi German Army. Not the regular German army. There is a difference. The regular German army hated the Nazis. Most of the German soldiers in the regular army didn't know about the camps.

You made a comment that the American soldiers directing their anger to the wrong people. These camps were pretty much in the back yards of the German towns. The people in these towns knew about the camps. They said they didn't. That's bullshit. You will NEVER, convince me they didn't. They knew. No doubt in my mind they knew.
