The German Luger was a temperamental (can go off accidentally), yet very powerful pistol. It was considered an excellent trophy to take home. He wasn't an idiot, I hate to be corrective here... The Luger was an extremely volatile pistol--known to go off during cleaning, go off while in the holster, etc. Regarding Lt Dyke: he was "the favorite of someone up at regiment, and was sent down to get some combat time." When the NCOs complained about Sobel and had him transferred, that was before they jumped into combat. But with Dyke, they can't make a last minute change like that--especially since he's "the favorite of someone at regiment."
