That was Jimmy Fallon! Winters was shaving because he's a good officer. They pay attention to details like that. The fact that Winters is willing to shave with ice cold water in that situation shows how seriously he takes his role as setting the example as a leader. Also, back then you had a can of hard-ish cream, and you would use a shave brush to dip in water, and then rub on the can of cream, and then wipe it on your face. They didn't have shaving cream. We watched BoB when I was in Afghanistan in 2005 and in 2006. I was a Medevac pilot, and this was always the episode (the "medic episode" we called it) that hit us the hardest. The boot size thing still exists today. For some reason, the Army has a million size-9 boots. I wore size 13, and always had to get them special ordered and wait. Trench foot, on the other hand, is when your feet are wet for a really, really long time. If trench foot gets out of hand, you can have to have your foot amputated. There probably is a correlation between too-small boots and trench foot, but in the case of this episode it is illustrating two different dynamics. The bright light in the sky was a Flare (a parachute flair). The purposes are probably numerous: everything from the enemy trying to keep them from sleeping at night and forcing them to be on alert 24/7, all the way to lighting the area to see if they can see someone to shoot at. That definitely cut off early. Maybe we can catch the rest of the reaction sometime.

Hey guys, I think the episode cut short somehow.
