This series is taken from the (true-to-life) book Band of Brothers, by Stephen Ambrose (I highly recommend reading--it's very good).

4F is unfit to serve, and in the beginning one of the veterans said that some of the 4F guys committed suicide because they couldn't go. Fit for service is 1A.
They also said that paratroopers got an extra $50 for jumping out of planes--$50 more than regular infantry.

I’m glad you guys are reacting to this. It’s a great series.
We’ve been in a few questionable wars since, but in WWII, we were unquestionably on the side of good. We were attacked by Japan, who was allied with Germany, who was trying to take over Europe. And we now know what evil the Nazis were doing at the time. These men volunteered bc they loved our country. Many were the children or grandchildren of immigrants, who left their homes to come to America, and they were now patriotic Americans. Had we lost the war, we would not be the same country, with all of the freedoms that we enjoy today.
The letter that Sgt. Martin received was from his wife, and in it, she tells him that Sgt. Guarnere’s brother died fighting the German’s in Italy. Guarnere grabbed Martin’s jacket by mistake and found the letter in his pocket.
Eisenhower was the general who was commanding the entire US military in the war. He went on to become President after the war.
They are about to jump into Normandy, France, in what became known as D-day. Since they are paratroopers, they will be jumping inland, behind the German battalions. What you’ve probably heard about Normandy is how we “stormed the beaches.” That’s what’s happening on the other side of the battalions- we were invading the beaches from the sea, while the German’s were raining down bullets upon us. We eventually took the beaches, which is why we celebrate, but there was a heavy, heavy cost of life. You guys should really watch Saving Private Ryan, bc it shows that event from the view of the invading US Army, very realistically. What you’ll see in this show is the viewpoint of the paratroopers who landed inland to attack the Germans from behind. France was already under Nazi control, so attacking from the sea and the air were the only options to enter the mainland of Europe.

Sorry for all the post. You are right. Eisenhower at this time, 1944. Is a General. Franklin D Roosevelt is President of the US.

It's not just about D-Day. It's where it starts for these men. As they fight their way across Europe. Normandy, Holland, Belgium and Germany. And the hell they went through to get there.
