Glad you guys are watching this. Here’s a few things- A lot of the corruption and things that you attribute to being “back then,” are really specific to the communist government of the Soviet Union. People were told what to do, and they had no choice. Every citizen was assigned their occupation, including that “senior engineer” who was so young. They were known for being super secretive so the world would not know their secrets. That’s why everything is so frustratingly “need to know.” It’s also why they were being spied on by the KGB. If you didn’t do what you were told (and especially in a situation like this), you were likely to just disappear. The government is trying to solve the problem, while keeping as much of the details as possible from getting out to the public and the rest of the world. This was during the Cold War and they wanted to become the world’s superpower, instead of the USA. The advanced level of math that they are doing, the calculations are close to precision. So when they say that something is impossible, it’s impossible, or else there’s something that they are not factoring in. But this is why all the ppl in the beginning, and even these two scientists, were in total disbelief that the core could have exploded. I looked up 400 rubles in 1986. Apparently there’s no way to get a really accurate conversion, but it would probably be less than $2,000 today. I read that this show exaggerated how horrifying the conditions of those patients were, and how easily spread the effects were between people. I hate when they do that, bc the reality was still horrendous and deadly, so why change it for dramatic effect? Anyway, enjoy the rest of the show.
