When something is changed on the timeline (the Sacred Timeline which was created by the time keepers to prevent the creation of the multiverse), that decision creates a new branch which is a whole new timeline. So when Loki used the tesseract to escape, he created a new timeline which was destroyed when the TVA arrested him for it. So the Sacred timeline where Loki is captured and taken back to Asgard remains intact. This Loki can never return to it because then there’s be 2 Lokis on the sacred timeline.

Loki was supposed to be “pruned” (killed) but Mobius saved him so they can get his help in capturing this other Loki variant. So the Loki you know from all the other movies after the first Avengers isn’t this Loki.
