2023-09-20 16:36:50 +0000 UTCThis. People misinterpret Rhaenyra doing what she wants with her actually being free. She isn't. Rhaenyra got away with so much because her father is the King and he can make what she does go away, because when you're King, the truth is what you say it is. Rhaenyra has more privilege than Alicent could ever have, not only because she is a Targaryen with a dragon (a literal weapon of mass destruction), but she also had a father who wipes away all her misdeeds by punishing others for saying those misdeeds out loud. If Rhaenyra were any other woman doing the same things, she'd have been punished or killed a long time ago.

2023-09-19 23:11:34 +0000 UTCI think people judge Alicent’s freedom unfairly, through a 2023 lens instead of putting themselves in the perspective of a subservient young girl/woman in Westeros. Sophie herself commented on how queens are not meant to be outspoken or have authority, (even telling her to stay in her place during the episode 7 scene when she wanted an eye for an eye), but then she also blames Alicent for not standing up for herself sooner and being more independent minded. Ppl forget that Rhaenyra only gets so much freedom to do as she pleases because she’s the king’s daughter. Alicent didn’t have that privilege growing up or as an adult with Viserys, Otto, and even Larys holding their power over her head.

Her speech to Alicent made no sense when the same thing applies to her, Rhaenys does everything Corlys wants even when it's already cost them two kids and then kills a bunch of people as if that's not gonna reflect on Rhaenyra.

Because otherwise, to a viewer, it looks like you think what you originally thought unless you clarify it for the viewers later.

2023-09-19 19:20:38 +0000 UTCAnother thing, Alicent in fact didn't have a mind of her own, at least in the tv adaption. She is always in a room full of men who served the realm and the King. She could never truly rule. When Viserys died, the kingly duties would be assigned to Otto anyway.
