But I'm happy that Mair is thinking on both sides. It's so easy to just attack Alicent and her side and see it all black and white, but it's always deeper than that. No side is perfect and no side has done things perfectly. Rhaenyra is not innocent or blameless, she's made poor choices that don't exist in a vacuum and affect those around her. And while you can argue "well that's not how it should be" it IS how it is, and it affects them. Rhaenyra having bastards has in fact affected other people around her. Not for having them alone, but for pretending they are her trueborn kids. This act alone has affected multiple people and it's being silenced to protect her and her mistakes, and people would rather get mad at everyone who is affected by it, than see how her actions have caused issues.

"Alicent has been bitter over the years that Rhaenyra gets to play by her own rules and still be next in line as heir. Alicent doesn't seem to fully grasp that if she proves Rhaenyra's sons aren't legit, the consequences can get very dire for Rhaenyra’s family."
mind you, the only reason rhaenyra can even "play by her own rules," is because her dad is the most powerful man in westeros. the equivalent of a rich girl who gets away with things because one phone call from daddy gets her off the hook, and damn whoever her actions harm in the process, so long as she's okay.
dire how exactly? the only person who can punish rhaenyra is the king, and we all know he isn't going to do that. at most, he may be compelled to strip her of the title of heir and strip her sons of their titles. but he would never kill her or her kids, let's be serious here.
the truth is, there are 2 reasons why the truth coming out will be bad for rhaenyra, and neither has to do with her life or her children's lives.
1. viserys wants to keep his word to rhaenyra to keep her as heir. he knows if that gets out, people will push him even more to remove her as heir for making a mockery of the throne by trying to place bastards on to it.
2. it makes the velaryon's and their combined marriage look bad. if rhaenyra had bastards with another man, it'll seem like she "cucked" laenor. it's an insult to their house that they married and she did not even provide them heirs for driftmark or to solidify their alliance. viserys is trying to also keep peace with the velaryons and targaryens. also, if that gets out, corlys has to admit he has no heirs, and it goes to vaemond, that'll cause even more bitterness with corlys and viserys.
rhaenyra was never in any danger of dying if the truth got out because viserys was never going to kill his child. the worst she was in danger of was making herself look bad as an heir and she'll be pushed out and aegon ii crowned instead.
alicent knew this. she knew that her child just lost his eye and got waved off, because viserys would rather keep his vow to rhaenyra to make her heir at any cost, due to his guilt about what he did to aemma. the memory of aemma and his guilt overpowers anything else to viserys, and alicent sees that.

I get Alicent is perceived as having done a lot in that moment, but I want you to imagine it was you who wakes up to find your childs eye has been cut out and your significant other literally just says "kiss and make up" and offers no kind of retribution (and it doesn't have to be as extreme as an eye), but literally no kind of punishment?
Your child has been permanently maimed and your partner won't do anything about that, and you can't do anything to give them justice but beg them to care enough to enact it for you, but instead they threaten to exact punishment on YOU and your kids if you speak on rumors about their firstborn child again. Like Alicent is literally having to BEG her husband to remember that Aemond is his freaking child and not just Rhaenyra.
The blatant favoritism is on display here and Alicent is being gaslit into thinking her anger and despair about her sons permanent maiming is unworthy of anything other than a "hug it out and be done with it."
Like Viserys is the king. The only one who can sentence Rhaenyra or her kids to death for this is HIM. He easily could solve this without putting her in any harm's way, but he won't. He'd rather allow her to keep up the facade, instead of coming up with actual solutions.
What basically happened is Viserys showed that as a king, he was not going to do anything at all to the son of Rhaenyra who cut out his sons eye, but he WILL punish anyone who speaks on rumors about them being bastards. His wife, her kids, anyone, because Rhaenyra > his "second family" was firmly established here in their minds.
He just proved Alicent right to be cautious for her kids safety, and her kids saw it too. And as a mother who witnessed such blatant disregard, of course she snapped.

Alicent is rightfuly upset because while she has been doing everything she's been told to do (being a lady, been a good wife to king & gave him heirs), she feels Rhaenyra has been allowed to do whatever she wants and shouldn't be rewarded by becoming queen especially since she has illegitimate children. Alicent's sons are wild but she feels they have more of right over Rhaenyra's children to be King. And she is techincally right since Rhaenyra's children are bastards. It just really pisses off Alicent that Rhaenyra is outrightly lying about her children and everyone is choosing to accept it, along with the King. That plus her son loosing an eye just causes her to go off. Its bascially all the years of resentment that's been built up against Rhaenyra + her son loosing an eye at the hand of Rhaenyra's son, makes her angry understandable.

Alicent has been bitter over the years that Rhaenyra gets to play by her own rules and still be next in line as heir. Alicent doesn't seem to fully grasp that if she proves Rhaenyra's sons aren't legit, the consequences can get very dire for Rhaenyra’s family. Her own son losing an eye just cranked up that already pent up anger and jealousy she already had over the years. And honestly, I've got no clue how Alicent’s boys turned out so ruthless, compared to Rhaenyra's children who are lil angels. (Maybe Otto?)
Rhaenyra, despite her track record of questionable decisions, really adores her kids. The stakes are way higher for her if her children's right to the throne gets challenged than if Alicent throws shade to get the king to favor her own son. Alicent's tactics haven't been working for years either, the king is constant on his stance.
People give Viserys a hard time for not being tough enough about Rhaenyra's claim, but even after having his own son, he didn't make the high lords of Westeros swear loyalty to him. He also reaffirmed Rhaenyra's place as heir plenty of times verbally. In this episode, he made his position cristal clear, even though everyone knows the truth. (kids aren't Laenors)
Despite knowing all this, the greens can't seem to respect the king's wishes and keep pushing for Aegon to be heir. Maybe it's Viserys' fault for doubling down and keeping his daughter as heir even while knowing the society might not be cool with it after he dies and particularly after tying the knot with a family as ambitious and traditional as the Hightowers. Or the Hightowers are to blame for not accepting the king's progressive decision to keep his daughter as heir, even though the Hand himself suggested that be done. From the greens pov, they've been doing right by the realm (running Old Town, serving as Hand, and basically ruling on behalf of the sickly king for decades). They probably feel they've earned a shot at the claim more than Rhaenyra, who's been doing what she wants. It’s not their call to make tho, the king still prioritizes making his firstborn happy.
Rhaenyra has been impulsive, pushing boundaries because that’s what her life has reinforced her with pops being a passive king + inappropriate Targ uncle’s influence, it's hard not to empathize with her in this society. Fortunately, she's raised some great kids and has no real evil, or twisted ambition in her heart. (from what I've seen) Instead she has tough battles ahead, fighting to keep her claim and reflect on the choices she's made that have made her vulnerable. These decisions aren't hurting the realm, they’re hurting her shaky claim to the throne and how people view her already controversial legitimacy. Rhaenyra is level headed and is willing to consistently compromise to make win-win situations (her marriage proposal for Helena + dragon). She's wants to marry Daemon now to strengthen her claim, which was 100% vulnerable with Laenor, and freed Laenor in the process. She knows this will further tarnish her already shaky reputation, but at this point she is willing to take those risks. It's not just about being queen anymore, but also about protecting her sons as well. I can respect that. I think we would be better off with the mature, level headed Rhaenyra as queen.

Yup yup!! Poor alicent LOWKEY though like she was ranting and all of a sudden “yeah I killed my family “ HUH!!! 😭. But the fact she took advantage of it instead of idk BEING THE QUEEN!? is what made me really really lose my respect besides the baby thing at the beginning of last ep.

Yeah I think people miss that he didn’t throw the first punch, unless you count claiming Vhagar as a first punch. They start paying more attention when he punches Baela, because it was shocking.

Rhaenyra didn’t say to “torture” Aemond. She said “question sharply.” I doubt she was asking her father to torture his son, a prince.
I agree that they’re attempting to gaslight Alicent, but they’re failing, obviously, because she KNOWS she’s right. They are however bullying her into silence about it. The entire realm is meant to be bullied into silence about it, or risk losing a tongue.

I agree with Sophie !!! It about what drives the characters to me and the fact team green is misogynistic AS FUCK. But yeah but I also understand mair’s POV too. But the fact alicent wants to uphold that shit anti-woman system AND while being a hypocrite because your going AGAINST your kings order AND being rude to your own family members?? Like duh laenor not the dadddy but everyone else was okay with it and that’s all that matters and she STILL picking like what?? And Why alicent is so bothered mind your business especially when HER FATHER your husband is in agreement with her?! But that’s my personal opinion right here.

Even though I like Laenor so I’m glad he’s still alive, he did die in the book and it’s pretty important to the plot. Laenor still being alive creates multiple massive plot holes for the future.

I loved everything about this episode!!! alicent has so much daddy issues and issues with her own husband but she projects them onto rhaenrya and her children and its weird. I definitely agree with Sophie in the discussions, rhaenrya isnt hurting anyone in her actions, sure people are talking about her behind her back but she's dealing with it while alicent makes everything rhaenrya does her problem when it's not, she's just hateful and hungry for power like her father and she blames rhaenrya. team black all the way!!!

1. I suggest you go back and listen to Corlys’ brothers speech. You’ll understand why Daemon laughed.
2. Yes targeryans can be burned. Hence Deamon’s wife burning to death last episode.
3. Dragons only “belong” to the person that claims them and they bond to. They don’t pass them down like pets.
4. The issue with the bastards is that it’s blatantly obvious. But in the books rhaeyns has brown hair so in theory you can say it came from their grandmother.

Also I think you guys have misinterpreted some stuff. Otto was never sent away for treason, he was sent away because Viserys no longer felt like he could trust his judgement. And Alicent didn’t tell Larys to go after Harwin, she didn’t care about Harwin. Larys *on his own* decided to kill his father Lyonel so that the Hand position would be free and Otto could come back. Alicent would then owe him a favour, even though she didn’t ask him to do it.

Even the actors agree that Alicent’s anger was justified and she was being gaslit by Viserys and Rhaenyra. How does your 10 year old son get maimed for no good reason and you scream at him while he’s sitting there in pain for stating the fact that Jace and Luke are bastards? And afterwards order everyone to get along? And even Rhaenyra asking for Aemond to be tortured for information that she knows is true after her son has just taken out his eye??? As a mother I would be fucking fuminnnnnng. How is everyone else allowed to be angry or suggest violence but not the mother whose child has been permanently disfigured and is being told to “get over it”?

Rhaenyra says there was no joy in having sex with Laenor, and Sophie responds by saying maybe Rhaenyra took no joy in it… even though we know Laenor is gay. So you think there’s a chance Laenor enjoyed it more than she did? Can’t see any logic there.

2023-09-13 16:13:47 +0000 UTC
Lol my opinion hasn’t changed no matter how many times I watch this episode. You can’t “steal” a dragon. If Vhagar wasn’t meant to be Aemond’s, Aemond couldn’t claim her. In fact, their bond was already solidified that when Luke maimed Aemond Vhagar roared outside in pain. Jace, Luke, Baela and Rhaena were the ones who jumped Aemond and it’s not like Aemond is that much older than them. Both him and Jace are 10 and Luke, Rhaena and Baela are 8.

Otto wasn’t imprisoned. The guys Larys used to kill his brother and father were common criminals who were already going to die for their crimes, so they had nothing to lose.
Daemon was laughing at a specific thing that Vaemond Velaryon said at the funeral - about Velaryon blood running thick. He wasn’t laughing at Laena dying. You guys were talking over it so you missed it, even though it was in subtitles.
Also I’m not sure how Laena’s death is somehow Daemon’s fault, unless you blame him for getting her pregnant. She was going to die on the birthing bed and she already told us she wanted “a dragon rider’s death” earlier in the episode.

Remember when alicent aemon and her daughter was in the room and they were talking about aemon getting a dragon his sister did say he will have to lose an eye for it
