Daemon & Viserys parents were brother & sister, so incest was very common with the Targaryens during this time. And yall will see more of it as the show continues.

Rhaenyra's mother Aemma married her first cousin, Viserys. Aemma was half Targaryen on her mothers side and half Arryn on her fathers side. Though I guess its worth noting that cousin marriage is pretty normal throughout all of Westeros. Its sibling marriage that is considered taboo and only tolerated from the Targaryens.

So House of the Dragon literally means House of Aegon, or Aegon's House. The show is exploring Aegon's descendants, making it fitting that the show is about the house of The Dragon. House of Dragons loses the poetic meaning. Beyond that explanation, House of the Dragon is just how the people in Westeros talk. If the Starks referred to their house, they wouldn't say house of the wolves, they would say house of The Wolf. The characters say "the hour of the wolf" or "the hour of the bat" when referring to time, and blood of the Dragon, etc.

Also, Ser Leanor has Targaryen blood from Rhaenys, so Rhaenyra’s impending marriage would be another incestuous match. These types of unions have been consistent.

You guys seem to really be getting into the power dynamics of the characters now, and making predictions, while at the same time admitting you could be wrong and letting scenes play out more before judging. Just like rhaenyra. Except rhaenyra isn’t in our reality but hers. As viewers we can acknowledge this because we live in this reality. This is where the divide happens. Continue with your real world mentality or a westoros one. Then another. Are you gonna conform to their standards/narratives or not? In their world mindset. Rhaenyra is the epitome of not conforming but trying to stay normal. Difference is her normal/standards in their world is damn near inhumane for women. This whole episode was summarized. The true problem. The same from the beginning. She was not born a man. Viserys in show didn’t even train his daughter for heirship she was 15-16 ish at the pilot. As opposed to others who were raised to be in this environment. TO BE POLITICAL. Not saying she is completely unaware. But there’s a difference in doing something because you have to or for the better of someone or something else then. 90% you don’t have to 10% you choose to or is required. EP 4-5 is a glimpse into rhaenyra’s stage in life adjustment into heirship. Into realizing the importance of it. So in my opinion no they aren’t mindlessly defending her. They are just empathizing with the character and sees the environment she’s in for what it is? OUT FOR HER and DANGEROUS. But she doesn’t. And they realize that.

2023-09-01 18:41:23 +0000 UTCWatching you guys mindlessly defend Rhaenyra’s decisions this episode reminded me of y’all reactions w/ late season 8 Dany and I know there’s a lot more coming haha. The reckless choices she made are easily excused as “so rebellious, the world is wrong, she should fuck who she wants—the men do it.” Supporting what Rhaenyra is doing, especially when you’d supposedly kill the man who did that very same thing to your 16 yo daughter, is confusing to me. Lmaoo but “good for her” 🤣 #GoGirls ✊🏽✊🏽 Men in this world have to reluctantly go to war and do stuff like stand watch in front of a door all night every night for honor, family, or power to give their super limited lives some type of purpose. They fight and die for their honor like the kid who killed the other guy for being disrespected or the lords who get their heads crushed for participating and winning in those horse tournies lmao. It’s not just women suffering and not having much choices to be free because of “duty”. The serious nature of vows in Westeros means high lords value their wives' virginity, there’s no DNA tests for them and lords hold all the power so thats the closest things to sure-things they have available when it comes to ensuring paternity for their true-born heirs and they unfortunately leverage their daughters for positioning due to this fact. Rhaenyra, as the heir to the Iron Throne fully understands this and risks her position by sleeping with a man she’s unmarried to or being susceptible to those accusations. She lives a better life than 99.9% of women in this world and has ridiculous amounts of freedom/options, all she had to do is her duty to the realm and marry any man of her CHOICE. I disagree with how this world is but this is the reality of it and I gotta say, it's funny watching Mair cheer on our impulsive teen queen, while the real adults who deeply care for her (best friend/dad) are left sweeping up her lying mess. Who would deal with reality when you've got drama and dragons? I have compassion for Rhaenyra, and I agree Viserys should’ve married her and our impulsive king Daemon from the start but that wasn’t their choice to make, they’re not king. Viserys’ love for his family make him just as “weak” as the council that preys on him. He knows his history well and how dangerous his family can be with their immense power, he knows Daemon doesn’t give a fuck about burning everything so he thinks he is doing what’s best for the realm as king by keeping him away from the throne. He knows fully Rhaenyra has flashes of that as a Targ but is confident she’ll be more like her mom because he loved her. He’s also fully aware of what Otto is doing but ignores it by upholding Rhaenyras claim because he felt he’s vital to the crown. Viserys is far from the weakest or a bad king. Sometimes indecisive, gullible and passive, yes. If you guys value complete Targ fire, blood and authority over the stability of the realm then I guess you can say he is a bad king. I’m more of a Varys-realm kind of guy but damn, don’t flip me to the Hightower side please 😭

You guys would pick up a lot more details if you didn’t talk over the show. It’s only an hour, just make comments, don’t have conversations. Jot something down if you want to remember it and discuss it afterward. Or pause the show. You’ll be better off for picking up on details, and your reactions will be more enjoyable.

He purposely took her to that pleasure house and removed her hat so that she would be recognised and rumours would spread about the two of them. And then lied about them sleeping together to Viserys. Daemon was clearly trying to force Viserys into wedding Rhaenyra to him so that one day he would be King consort.

That Daemon, who’s married btw, can visit the pleasure house whenever, but Rhaenyra is spotted once and it’s a problem. It’s the reality of that time though, so I understand why Viserys would be mad about it. There’s already pressure on him to make Aegon the heir so Rhaenyra doing this just gives people more of a reason to question her claim. It’s not fair, but it’s true.

It’s up to the audience/readers’ interpretation though whether it’s just an old wives’ tale or something more.

A big theory in the books there’s more to it but I dont recommend looking it up until you finish house of the dragon. Because it started in aegons time if it is real 😂. I am 100% IT IS CUZ THERES SO MUCH EVIDENCE. For the part about the maester with the tea. But I think viserys actually sent it. And that it’s regular. But I also never thought of it being poisoned.
