As Sofie said there has to be a reason, I don't believe it to be a conscious reason though. Rather it was triggered and he defaulted back to survival mode which for him is Reek. And to Mair’s point he acted cowardly due to this. And to Abigails point in this case it was probably the best because even if he was the best swordsman ever, he was so broken it would have gotten them both killed.
