But consider what actually happened after Jamie had that talk with Edmure Tully. The castle was taken without a lot of bloodshed, yes Bryndan Tully (Blackfish) died, but as we know he would have never yielded and Jamie even wanted to just capture him. IMO these last few episodes show how Jamie tried to reason with people, e.g. the Blackfish to avoid bloodshed, but because he is commonly known as an oathbreaker, nobody trusts him. Blachfish even said it directly to him "trusting in oathbreakers is like building on quicksand". So Jamie reverted back to threats, because he knows because of his reputation people will believe them coming from him. A little side story from the books, which is not clear if it is the same in the show, but it is possible. Bryndan Tully (Blackfish) was actually a childhood hero of young Jamie Lannister. I think he even wanted to become a knight because of the heroic stories he heard of people like him. I suspect he was kind of sad, when he heard what low opinion Blackfish had of him when they had that parley. Because when he was young he just wanted to be like him.
