Walt told Jesse he only needed 737.000 dollars to take care of his family. By the time Gus offered him 1.5 million for 3 months work, Walt turned it down because he said he had all the money he needed. It was only after Jesse started to cook Walt’s formula that Walter out of spite, jealousy and ego decided to cook for Gus and to cut Jesse out. Walt’s actions from that point on had consequences which in turn had Hank killed.

Re Gretchen and Elliot: it’s important to remember we don’t truly *know* with 100% certainty the extent of Walter’s work on the discovery that made the company successful. He said they cut him out, but Gretchen said that he dumped her and left with no explanation… Vince Gilligan has confirmed Walt's personal sense of inferiority as the driving force for leaving.
It’s definitely possible he truly was the sole founder of whatever discovery made them successful, but it’s more likely that all three of them (as PhD students) worked together. And regardless, Walter left when the company was in its infancy, so G & E did do more of the work in building the company, Walter is just furious about their success.
