He definitely knew the police would be listening, so he tried to make it sound like Skyler was held under duress/was threatened during all of the events of the show, and that she knew little to nothing about what Walter did. He wanted to make sure that she didn’t go down for anything, so he took all of the blame on himself and made it sound like Skyler had to be in fear for her life and that’s why she didn’t go to the cops. Walter is a POS but he pretty rarely ever speaks to Skyler that way, which is why if you rewatch you can see on her face the moment she can tell he’s playing a character to try to save her. It’s a very tactful way of Walter saying I’m sorry and goodbye, you can see him in agony during the worst parts. Both of their performances during that scene are PHENOMENAL!
