Don't forget, Ned sent a letter to Stannis that Geoffrey and his siblings are children of Jamie Lannister not Robert Baratheon, meaning they have no claim to the throne. In that case the throne by law would go to Roberts eldest brother, which is Stannis. Stannis sent many letters throughout Westeros informing everyone of that. Geoffrey and the Lannisters of course claim that that letter is a lie. Rob Stark does not really want the Iron throne, he would like to split the North from the 7 kingdoms and rule it independently. Renly would have been next in line of succession after Stannis, but he had powerful allies (his lovers and wives family the Tyrells) and does not consider Stannis to make a good king, so he wanted to just take the throne by force without any legitimacy.
