Hey great reaction and great review. I liked your comment about races coming together to defeat evil. While Tolkien often denied it, its thought that his time serving in the war inspired themes in this and you can definitely see parallels with sauron/sauroman and a certain Austrian dictator from ww2.

2024-02-17 00:26:42 +0000 UTCThe thing is, Gandalf didn't just choose "hey I'm gonna go this way even though it's a bad idea!" They had three options: 1) go over the mountains (and Saruman made sure that failed) 2) go around the southern edge of the mountain range through the Gap of Rohan, which has them basically walking right past Saruman's front door, or 3) Go under the mountain through the mines. NONE of those choices were good options, so Gandalf essentially left it up to fate.
