Meet Ben, The "Huh" Cat

Screw Ryan Gosling, the cat saying “huh” is literally me.

At least, that’s what millions across the internet seem to believe, as this little dude is receiving astounding levels of success online.

His real name is Ben, and stars on a TikTok account called planetvenus5000.

The original video in which Ben appears to say “huh” is actually of him meowing, and was sourced from a 2021 clip, and it’s worth noting that it was previously known as the “bruh cat” before the “huh cat”.

This occurred when Ben’s meow was dubbed over with the classic “huh” sound effect, which is often mixed with the song “me for you” from the SpongeBob soundtrack, and the earliest version of this I could find was uploaded in September 2022 although it appears to be a repost.

Plus the distinctive facial markings on Ben the cat make it look as if he has raised eyebrows, which really helps to sell the illusion of confusion.

The audio used here has been prominent in meme culture for years, however, as it was not only mixed with low res Spongebob footage thanks to the likes of Walnutware in 2021, but it was also paired with a dog beforehand and became a trend in its own right, before becoming famous thanks to a cat.

However, try as I might, I cannot find the source for the original “huh” – some believe it comes from a House episode, whilst others claim it is from Roblox, but no one has yielded concrete proof.

So if you have a link to the original, please comment below.

At any rate, the Huh Cat has evolved to the point where other characters have joined in on its madness, with the talking goat making an appearance to really hammer home the “huh?”.

This goat comes from a 2013 video, but has been dubbed over many times thanks to accounts such as vivi000.o this year.

It’s clear the gooberish and dumb reaction from Ben the cat is resonating with people on a level of magnitudes, as millions of memes wherein artists are claiming they are the cat reacting to many different situations are pouring out every day.

It’s worth noting that cats, of course, have a prime position on the internet – huge portions of online traffic is driven purely by videos of cats doing stupid stuff; the goofier the better.

In short, for Ben the cat to be filmed meowing in 2021, then to have it dubbed with the Spongebob “huh” meme in 2023, is indicative of the state of the internet and meme culture at large.

No matter how much it evolves and changes, cat content will always be king.

What meme would you guys like me to give a lesson in next? Let me know in the comments below.
