Doja Cat Likes Sam Hyde (Ad Free)

Doja Cat posted a picture of herself wearing Sam Hyde on her shirt, and almost immediately took it down due to the insane backlash it caused.

After all, Sam Hyde has long been a controversial figure – whilst he’s a comedian first and foremost, and responsible for a ton of memes, his characters have provoked plenty of criticism for their insane ramblings.

The image on the shirt itself is extremely recognizable, as comes from a meme wherein Sam is listed as a mass shooter, which has fooled news stations in the past as it’s been spreading since 2015.

At any rate, it’s important to discuss how a mainstream pop artist like Doja Cat has become the figurehead of a discussion surrounding Sam Hyde’s position in online culture.

A little while ago, Doja Cat made it clear she wanted to change her image to a far more edgy brand.

Demonic representation and edgy memes became her currency, and if you scroll down her Instagram page you can see evidence of this evolution.

Doja has always been vocal about her dabbling in chat rooms, and in 2019 said "People would pick on me and use horrible, horrible language, just the worst, and I just didn't understand why people were so crazy on there. So I became the person who would make offensive jokes and do things sort of out of the box.”

So, it definitely makes sense that she could have spent a ton of time on 4chan when she was younger, and thus been fully aware of Sam Hyde and the mass shooter meme, hence her wearing of the shirt.

Sam Hyde responded by posting a link to the shirt in question on his X account, demonstrating his approval.

Then there’s the allegations of Sam’s 5000 dollar donation to a cofounder of The Daily Stormer, but Sam hasn’t confirmed or denied them, he sort of just dances around the topic.

I guess ultimately Sam is wrapped up in so many layers of irony and edginess that it’s almost impossible to tell what’s real and what’s fake, which is likely what he’s trying to achieve.

Doja Cat also claims her last two extremely popular albums were just cash grabs, so perhaps this cynical view of her own career is what pushed her to flirt with the edgier side of internet culture.

It’s incredible how this level of overlap between pop princess and professional provocateur can occur, but ultimately stranger things have happened online than a Doja Cat and Sam Hyde crossover, so it’ll be interesting to see how this impacts the legacy of both performers.

What meme would you guys like me to give a lesson in next? Let me know in the comments below.
