My grandfather was a waist gunner on B17 and became a POW for the last year of the war, this and Stalag 17 always had a good personal connection. This is kind of a wierd one though. It's true but not, there really was a Memphis Belle and it was one of the first crews to fly their 25 but the mission crew etc were different from the movie. It's kind of a composite of events that happened to crews and missions across the war sort of combined to give a good understanding while telling their story. One of the cool things is only a handful of these planes still exist or are even air worthy, most being privately owned or in museums, this might have been one of if not the last time enough of these planes were together to form an entire squadron. There is a documentary from Wyler called Memphis Belle with cameramen flying on missions that was part of the PR from them. That film was later remastered and put in color and used to create another spectacular documentary on hbo(max) called the cold blue a few years ago. Great watch if you want to learn more. The new series on apple is also pretty good although does have mixed reception but I think overall did justice to the unit they followed.
