The point of Shinji character is a somewhat popular trope of weak, shitty relatable boy, who has a lot of growth ahead of him and proves a point that one doesn't need to be born hero to be one. Same as the heros in Frieren, who say they are afraid shirtless but still go. Same as Frodo, if you like this comparison more. Most hate to this kind of characters is because the weebs desperately do not want to relate.
