Week #5 Update: 11/26 - 12/1

Hello and hi!

Congrats on making it to the final boss of 2023. How was your week? Here is how mine went:

Sunday 11/26

I've been going down a bit of a Paul Simon rabbit hole, mostly revisiting old records and watching interviews on YouTube. I saw a video of him walking through the chords to 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover and there was an interesting chord in there that I haven't played around with much. I came up with a progression on acoustic right before bed and wrote a quick stanza about my paternal grandfather who passed earlier this year.

Monday 11/27

I decided to spend the day expanding on the short piece that I had written the night before. After continually hitting snags on the last song (which I'm currently calling Ends), I wanted to write a full song on guitar before I sat down to record anything on the computer. I spent most of the day moving around the house with my acoustic reflecting on my Papa's life and my relationship to him. He was a complicated man whom I loved dearly. I'm sure I'll have a lot more to say about that another time. I wrote a full draft with a few small holes that I patched up right before I went to bed.

Tuesday 11/28

I woke up and got right to work recording this new song which is called Here Comes The Cold. It's one of the more intimate songs I've written. Stylistically, it's in the vein of artists like Mark Mulcahy, Elliott Smith, and Christian Lee Hutson. I finished the full draft before bed which is a small miracle. I sent a draft to Adam and he said it reminded him of Dreaming of Medusa with sprinkles of Salt.

I also received some great news Tuesday evening - the Ren & Stimpy reboot will be moving forward with my theme song! Please keep hush-hush until there is some sort of official announcement.

Wednesday 11/29

Wednesday was back to work on Ends. My goal was to finish a full draft by the end of the week so I could move on and be free of it for a while. It was also my birthday so I didn't make any great progress. But I did have a lovely dinner with my wife! 

Thursday 11/30

I had a bit of a lyrical breakthrough on Thursday that allowed me to finally wrap the song up in a satisfying way. Praise be! 

Friday/12/1

I spent all of Friday tracking the new parts that I had written for Ends. I finally have a full draft. It still needs a fair amount of work, but I'm happy to leave it for a while and come back. I think it's strong! Adam said it felt like Talking Heads meets Sonic the Hedgehog.

I also received bass from Eric for Come Again on Friday. He tracked it on his fretless bass and it has a really cool vibe. 

I'm feeling great about the progress in November. 5 new songs (including the Ren & Stimpy theme). If I keep this up, I'll have written 3,000 new songs by 2084.
