Back on my BS

A few weeks ago, I talked about how I'm wanting to put out (at least) one song a month this year. I didn't go into too much detail, but my hope has been to pick up where I left off with Incantations and create short stories that aren't totally dependent on current events.

Well, as I was sitting and brainstorming what that next song and video might be, I see this news about M&Ms dropping their spokes-candies for Maya Rudolph [most likely a publicity stunt, fyi]. Next thing I know, for better or worse, this song pours out of me.

I started writing around 11:00 am and had this voice memo shortly thereafter. I sat down to start recording, and for the first time ever, I performed the song straight through recording vocals and guitar at the same time. I had to go back and punch in a few lyrics as they were still under construction. I spent the next few hours adding production and exported my first mix sometime around 3:30 pm. I had to pick up my daughter at my parents' house at 4:00 pm, so I started work on the video around 4:30 and began editing about an hour later. I finished editing around 7:30 pm and put Sage to bed. Then added the lyrics and posted around 8:30 pm.

This might be my quickest turnaround since early Songs on The Computer days. I'm pretty happy with how it came together, but I also have conflicting feelings. The reason I worked so quickly was because I knew its window of relevancy was rapidly closing. I'm pretty tired of working that way and want to be more intentional about what I'm creating. But sometimes just creating something is better than spending the day trying to come up with the perfect idea. At least it feels better.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed. Hope to see you all Friday evening for the Country Western Celebration Watch-Along!

You've endured so much loss in your life. First, Spirit Halloween breaks up with you for Christopher Lloyd. Now, the Green M&M is just gone. Your pain is our pain.
