Unreleased Old Spice Song

Here's a track that ended up on the cutting room floor (pun intended): Unreleased Old Spice Reject

I'm quite fond of it! Mike Diva reached out and said he was working on this barbershop quartet  ad with robot heads and wanted me to help write the music. This was our first submission. The big musical note was that it had too much of an indie-pop vibe and they wanted something that sounded more like a traditional barber shop quartet. Their other big note was that lyrically they wanted something weirder and darker. The ad agency took take #2 to daddy Old Spice (which included the lyrics "Hair doesn't have any feelings, and neither does my roommate Brad, but you don't see me cutting him into pieces even though he owes me two months rent") and daddy Old Spice was like "why is this ending so weird and dark we want fun and happy."

This seems to be par for the course unfortunately! Mike did another ad for xbox that I helped write and did a lot of the music for and it transformed into something unrecognizable. I loved working with Mike though! We hope we can take the bones of this original track and eventually do something else with it. But he's busy killing it at SNL directing digital shorts so probably won't happen anytime soon.

Here's the final product if you haven't seen it: Barber Shop Sextet

I'm getting ready for the launch of the big vinyl campaign this Friday! Hoping this is the calm before the storm. If all goes well, it will go live at 9 am EST. I tend to do everything last minute and the campaign still hasn't been officially approved by bandcamp. Fingers crossed there are no issues there!

Now to get started on the 2021 (Has Been So Fun) video. Wish me luck!

That early version was really fun as well

The only ads I’ve really done are this, Xbox and Spirit. Spirit had pretty limited notes.

That's weird they didn't seem into it, it stays pretty on-brand to their absurd ad campaign they were running with Terry Crews. Now I'm curious how many of the songs you write for ads end up airing as something recognizable to your style vs getting modified into something unrecognizable like the xbox ad you mentioned.

Best of luck with the launch!

Them cutting these Brad lyrics was a mistake. #makebradpay

tfw the screams in your head aren't coming from your hairfriends after all.

Good luck on 2021!! I can see Desmond dancing on vinyl as it plays already. Love the backstory on the Old Spice project. Very catchy little tune. You could easily twist that song into something for kids… apprehensive about getting their first haircut, etc. — well, not the Brad part.

Good luck man! It is funny how companies ask for one thing and upon receiving it say "this isn't what were looking for."
