Releasing control

Stay curious to the information and feedback from your body in this nourishing yin practice. You’ll gently soften tight muscles and hips by letting go of control and exploring, rather than forcing. Begin in a seated staff pose and expansive heart opener in supported fish. Then, move through a hip and tension-release sequence of staggered pigeon, twisted roots, and figure four. End in either another heart opener or a relaxing shavasana.

Props: 2 blocks, blanket or cushion

Benefits: tension release, deeper connection with your body, softening the grip, hip release, heart opening, liver, gall bladder, urinary system meridians, cooling anger and frustration

Living Your Yoga embodiment practice: During a 24-hour period, allow another person to take the lead. If they want the radio on in the car, do not object. If they want the radio off, do not object. Let them determine the temperature, what movie you go to, or what you have for dinner. This is not about giving up your good sense or preferences, but rather letting go of attempts to control all of the details of your life, particularly the things that do not really matter. Learning to give up the attempt to control small aspects of your life will point out clearly how much you might hold on to the need to be in charge. It can be both irritating and enlightening.
