For the most part, I think I react as most people would, which is disgust. When someone reaches out to help you, you don't slap their hand away. I think your reaction to immigrants who are apparently, dropped into extreme poverty and acting distasteful is also normal. It's not nice to experience, and makes no sense to bring people into the country who then find themselves on the streets - and how many more are burdening our stretched housing and healthcare systems at our expense? It's ridiculous and you're correct to point your finger towards the current gov't. Moreover, it was done without really opening dialogue with Canadians. It was imposed on us and I don't think it makes sense to anyone. However, I also see your pause. You recognize that these are still human beings after all, and if life were different, it could be you, perhaps 500 dollars away from losing some basement apartment. You saw their humanity and it gave you pause. This is why these decisions aren't so simple. Ah, fuck the immigrants! It's not so easy to say when you have some empathy. When you realize you descended from them yourself. This is the weight on our shoulders that we need to carry as first world citizens. We need to balance sharing the abundance, welcoming others like we were once welcomed, without turning our country into a shithole and destroying our culture and shared prosperity.
