Helloooo everyone! this is our 2nd Animancy spell and I'm going to start explaining a bit more about the soul stuff and Identity / True Self in Athana in due course. For now I'm focused on getting meat on the bones for the Daragaard setting as well as the wider meta structure of Athana Chronicles as we're moving forwards! Anyway - without any more faffing: Unstable Drain!

The Spell

Initial Effect: Upon casting, choose a target within range. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or suffer 8d6 force damage, with half as much on a successful save. Narrate the visceral connection of purple ethereal chains that bind the caster to the victim.

Ongoing Effect: At the end of each of the target's turns, it must make another Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it suffers 3d6 force damage. If successful, the spell ends. As the DM, describe the target’s struggle as their very essence is siphoned away.

Healing: Half of the damage dealt by this spell heals the caster. This duality of destruction and restoration is a core theme in Animancy and should be emphasized in the storytelling.

Endgame: Should the target drop to 0 hit points, they perish. This ultimate consequence is a dramatic moment in any campaign and should be treated with the gravity it deserves.
