Overview: Rellek, The Relleki Trials

In preparation for the first of our modules 'The Rannoch Trials' we're doing a bit of a deep dive into what and why they are! So here's your full lore dump into Rellek, and the trials!

In Daragaard, an established country nestled in the northern hemisphere of Athana, five noble houses rule and form the backbone of how this country is run. Founded by 5 war heroes from the 2nd war 800 years back, understanding the vast spectrum of needs of their homeland, they distributed the responsibilties of nation-building amongst themselves.

Known for their unyielding spirit and martial prowess, the half-orcs of House Rellek are the embodiment of strength and resilience. Residing in the western flatlands of Daragaard, they are the guardians of the realm, a shield against both external threats and internal turmoil. Their traditions, steeped in valor and combat, have yielded some of the most formidable warriors in Athana's recent history. The citizens of House Rellek are living warriors and protectors of their rich heritage and way of life, ensuring that the peace and stability Daragaard has enjoyed for ages continue to flourish.

Trials Concept and Significance

The Rellek Trials originated from the need to maintain autonomy within the different orcish-heritage tribal regions that united under Tribe Rellek during Daragaard’s formation. These trials are designed to grant a status akin to an ‘accepted’ member of the community, a title over the years that has been chosen to be named a ‘Woven’. This status allows individuals to fully integrate into the local community, enabling them to own property, have a say in local matters, and fully participate in the region's social and economic life.

Individuals born within a region are naturally considered ‘Woven’ and undergo a coming-of-age ceremony specific to their region. Outsiders, however, must actively partake in and complete the trials to gain this status. While outsiders are welcome to visit, their access to local amenities, trade, and certain social functions remains restricted until they achieve the ‘Woven’ status. Such as dedicated lodgings, taverns and commercial options while visiting the region they have not been accepted by.

Each of the five regions within Province Rellek – Rannoch, Hagalaz, Therum, Illium, and Rellek Proper – has the autonomy to design its own trials. These trials reflect the unique cultural and environmental aspects of each region. The trials are a blend of physical, mental, and spiritual challenges that test an individual’s resilience, wisdom, and adaptability.

Trial Adaptability

Across the regions, and even sometimes within the same region but at different times - the trials are diverse and tailored to assess a wide range of skills and qualities. These trials, varying from martial challenges to artistic performances, are designed to be inclusive, allowing individuals with varied strengths to find their path to acceptance. Select trials are personalized based on the aspirant's background and potential contribution to the community, ensuring each trial is meaningful and aligns with their capabilities. Other trials are standardized, reflecting the core values and primary needs of the region and providing a common challenge for all aspirants.

During times of conflict, the trials might emphasize martial prowess, while in peaceful periods, they may highlight cultural, artistic, or economic skills. This flexibility ensures that the trials stay relevant, continually attracting individuals who can positively contribute to the community in various ways. Ultimately, these trials are more than tests of skill; they are comprehensive evaluations of character, adaptability, and potential contribution to the societal fabric of House Rellek.

Acceptance and Reward

The process of being accepted through the trials is a deeply respected tradition. It signifies the individual's commitment to the region and its values. Once accepted, individuals are granted a symbolic arcanic tribal tattoo, representing their connection and loyalty to the region. This tattoo is a mark of honor but also bestows certain benefits that vary with each region’s characteristics.

The tattoos are unique in that they are applied with a special ink that appears colorless initially. The true color and nature of the tattoo emerge based on the bearer's identity and their ‘True Self’. This magical aspect of the tattoo represents the deep connection between the individual and the essence of the land they have chosen to bond with.

Collectively, the tattoos from each region can form a complete tribal image, symbolizing the unity and interconnectedness of all regions within House Rellek. Each region contributes a part of this larger image, placed on different parts of the arm and connecting on the upper back for Rellek Proper. This full image is rare and highly respected, representing a commitment to the entirety of House Rellek’s territory and values.

For those who choose not to receive tattoos, medallions of acceptance are offered. These medallions serve a similar purpose, signifying the bearer's status as a ‘Woven’ member of the community. However, choosing a medallion over a tattoo might be frowned upon by more traditional members of the society.
