Ages ago, the great dragon Sharakhul fell victim to a hive of Mind Tyrants, a psionically gifted race of subterran conquerers and slavers. Seeking a new vessel for their abominable hive mind, they spend decades torturing the dragon into submission, bent on erasing his spirit, originally intent on leaving the body intact. But the great dragon resisted and as punishment they psychically flayed him, stripping away his indomitable scales and reducing his form to a mass of undulating flesh. Crippled in body and spirit, wracked by pain and humiliation, Sharakhul retreated deeper into his own mind, desperately seeking refuge from the horrors inflicted upon him. The Mind Tyrants forced their dubious gift of telepathy on him, infiltrating his very mind and pursuing him into his thoughts and dreams. Cornered and on the brink of surrender, Sharakhul unleashed a stream of concentrated psychic might, channeling raw pain and emotions accumulated during a hundred years of unending agony. The Tyrants souls shattered, their hive mind collapsed and the dark tunnels of their colony clogged with the decaying bodies of the despotic kin, their minds annihilated by the dragon’s anguished onslaught.

His body flayed and defiled, his mind fractured in unmendable ways, the broken husk of Sharakhul rose from the depths and sought exile, pouring himself into foul methods of blood magic in a desperate attempt to mend his flesh and restore his scales. He conducted excruciating experiments on himself, unable to find a way to regain what had been taken from him. He took up residence atop the Harrowspire, soon a twisted nightmare of flesh and blood rising from the scab-crusted ruins of a lost city, its name purposefully forgotten to not invoke the Skinless Scourge. The Flayed Dragon still stalks the surrounding lands to continue his studies, the organic nightmare of his body swollen with tainted might, his glistening flesh ever-weeping crimson tears.
