Real Talk - MLK Day, Religious Schools, My Upbringing, Chelsea Manning

Hey patrons, in this video I talk about MLK from a Canadian perspective, the negative impact of religions schools from a social perspective (including my own sheltered upbringing), and touch on Chelsea Manning's run for Senate.

Real Talk - MLK Day, Religious Schools, My Upbringing, Chelsea Manning

Comments

Cardin being against freedom of expression is problematic. To try to make it a felony to support BDS is disgusting. Manning, however, also wants to suppress certain kinds of speech. She's thrown in with antifa, which means she's in favour of suppressing anything perceived as "fascist" speech--correctly perceived as such or not--"by any means necessary". This goes against the ACLU as well, ironic given Chelsea's prior good relationship with the ACLU. The ACLU defends the First Amendment rights of everyone, including Nazis. Some people think this makes the ACLU bad, but such commentators as Glenn Greenwald and Kyle Kulinski have explained why it actually isn't. Speaking of upbringing, David, I grew up in Canada too, but born to American parents. This meant that I learned two slightly different sets of values, and at different times in my life I've felt like either Canada had the right idea and the States didn't, or vice versa. We have laws in Canada against "hate speech", as you know. This is where I think the country I live in has absolutely the wrong idea, because I grew up being taught that freedom of speech was SACRED, and that suppressing ANY speech, no matter how hateful, was wrong. If Chelsea Manning refuses to follow the ACLU's lead in the future, if she tries to suppress people's speech through intimidation, then in THAT ONE RESPECT she will be no better than Ben Cardin. Yes, she might vote the right way when it comes to Medicare For All, ending the wars, and the list of things Kyle Kulinski goes through regularly when talking about what's best for America. Good for her as far as that goes. And good for her for being a whistleblower to begin with. But I feel VERY strongly about freedom of speech. If Chelsea doesn't hold it as sacred as I do, and as all Americans ought to, then I have trouble respecting her as a person.

I think from time to time how fortunate I was in growing up in a family that never discussed race. I remember my grandmother saying "there are black people with white souls, and there are white people with black souls".
