The gesture is called the maloik. Dio did start on the trumpet at age five. Any brass or woodwind instrument would definitely help with breath control for a singer. It did help him. Ronnie listened to opera and was heavily influenced by Mario Lanza. He also was a bass player in his first band.

Dio tells in his autobiography, page 13, that a buddy from middle school, Paul Consroe, introduced him to blues (B.B. King, Papa Charlie Jackson, Muddy Waters) and rock 'n' roll (Little Richard, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, and Elvis).
The lead guitarist and the bassist in this video were original band members. In August 1968, they formed a six-piece blues rock band called Polka Tulk Blues Band. The band dissolved in September to split from the slide guitarist and the sax player and re-formed as Earth, which became Black Sabbath in August 1969.
