Vinland Saga - 1x18 - Full Length Reaction

FULL LENGTH VERSION of Vinland Saga Season 1 Episode 18!

Comments

Definitely one of my favorite episodes of the series. I was raised Christian (don't practice anymore) and it completely recontextualized my understanding of the Garden of Eden story. When we ate of the fruit of knowledge we were cast out of Eden. I always understood Eden to be an actual place, but it's neat to think of it as a state of being. Once we had the knowledge to understand the natural world, we were made separate from nature itself and are doomed to suffer for it. Canute declaring war on God and intending to build his own paradise on Earth is a major vibe.

We as humans are selective with who we care about because we value those closest to us over others. The way "love" is described here is just a spiritual/religious take on consideration for all people. I choose to interpret this "love" not as the romantic love of someone or as the love of family, but rather as the absolute form of compassion and kindness. In the context of the show we see parallels in discussions with Thorkell/Thorfinn and Canute/Willibald. This is likely because Thors is someone who embodies that form of love that is mentioned by Willibald, and not just because he's dead. "A true warrior" as mentioned by Thorkell and "love" as described by Willibald can essentially be viewed as the exact same thing. This is why early on when Torgrim and Atli (the brothers with blond hair) are telling the priest about Thors, he becomes extremely invested in Thors as a person.

Byorn got scared and stopped after seeing Canute face because he resembled him of Thors face, who’s the only one who defeated him in his berserk form.

The claim here is that in the Bible, God calls for people to love unconditionally like Christ did and this conclusion is that humans cannot do this. We do not and CANNOT love a stranger to the same degree we do our family and partners and so the idea that we show (positive) discrimination towards those we love is absolutely accurate and true. I think people’s misunderstanding of what discrimination really means makes this confusing to some.

Tyler Owens

discrimination is not a mistranslation. if you "love" someone more than another, you are discriminating against the one you love less. ragnar loved canute more than himself and the entire village that got massacred. that's sorta the simplified basis of the philosophy explored in this episode :)
