It's aquatic for sure. I had the mental image of bald, pale, Gollum-like creatures living in a cave, but overexplaining would have ruined the song so I left it vague. I started with the lyric "papa likes the pools" and the insinuation that the singers are dominated by some sort of patriarchal figure, but I felt it worked better if I left him out. The listener can just wonder why the creatures "must not" talk about the upper world. In my imagined scenario, the upper world no longer exists. The Pools are a refuge, a safe place where they were able to survive the catastrophe that destroyed the surface .. Which changes the song into a lament of inexpressible longing .. too depressing .. so I opted not to make that story too clear in the lyrics. You can interpret it as you please.
