It's not a random act of cruelty or just a plot convenience, it's very deliberately meant as revenge for the history they believe to be true and a deterrent against a threat they believe to be real

2024-06-14 15:23:27 +0000 UTCSo we know from Ymir (the freckles girl) that when you're a dumb titan (technically called a Pure Titan) it's like a waking nightmare. You have no control over your actions and you're essentially being mentally tortured and unable to communicate with any other living soul, and you also can't die. So the Marleyans are using this fact as the ultimate punishment, turning the Eldians who misbehave into Pure Titans who also serve the double purpose of containing the Paradis residents inside the walls

2024-06-14 10:13:15 +0000 UTCI think Id be more willing to buy that if the Eldoans, at least the ones on the Island, weren't already manipulated into believing they needed to stay in the walls for their own safety anyway. Regardless of whether the Marleyans and rest of the world knew the extent of the Island King's manipulation of the people, they know that the last time they'd heard from the island was a pretty clear declaration of isolationist intent. It's kind of a moot point. That is to say, it's a contrivance for the sake of moving the story forward, and filling in some minor gaps. Which is fine! Storytelling is nothing without contrivances.

The purpose was to keep the eldians on paradise so they can't leave to mainland and keep them in fear without risking retaliation from the king

2024-06-14 04:25:27 +0000 UTCThis episode and the next are so damn cool. I was looking so forward to how they'd land this plane, man. Just a complete letdown from this point onward in my opinion. A consistent string of puzzling decisions. There's really only two character threads that make season 4 worth watching for me, but I'll save that for when we get there. To answer Courtney's question--the Marleyans turn the Eldians into titans so that nobody can make it to the walls to talk about what's going on because that's what is most convenient for the plot, if we're being 100% honest.
